City Council Budget Process Winding Down, Public Hearing May 1

Your last chance to squawk about Mayor Joe Ganim’s proposed budget, that calls for no tax increase, will be Thursday, May 1, 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers at a public hearing before the Budget & Appropriations Committee.

The public hearing will cover both the general budget and Board of Education.

The graphic above highlights the budget committee’s scheduled meetings, including a possible vote on the spending plan May 10 prior to a vote by the full council. The majority of the budget deliberations is done at the committee level.

Once the full council votes on the budget the mayor has a two-week veto window that is rarely used prior to the setting of the tax rate which will remain the same under the proposal.

While this plays out many discussions will take place between city officials and Bridgeport’s nine-member legislative delegation trying to pry as much state dough home to keep the municipal budget whole (and not create a hole).
