Four Weeks Left – Why Is Harris V. Trump So Close?

Considering Donald Trump’s legal woes, incendiary rhetoric, lies, distortions, demagoguery, odd hallucinations, so many ask: why is this presidential race so close?

Here’s why: a shift has occurred in national demographics. Remember the mantra days “Democrats are for the working class.” That has transitioned somewhat.

Trump’s base is predominately Whites without college degrees. Why the affinity?

They feel insecurity in so many ways: educationally, financially, professionally. Insecure people, particularly disengaged rural areas, would rather listen to a tough guy who’s wrong than a weakly perceived person who’s right. The financially insecure also view Trump vicariously, a money messiah who’ll lead them to a pot of manna.

These voters will overlook a lot if they feel – real or imagine – their pockets bulge.

So, this thing is close. Kamala Harris will win the national popular vote. Trump didn’t win it in 2016 and he didn’t win it in 2020. But that doesn’t matter in the way U.S. presidents are elected – based on the electoral college that will be decided by 10 or so competitive states.

One key advantage right now in Harris’s favor is the early vote turnout. The University of Florida election lab is publishing a real time early voting tracker, see here

So far the Democratic early vote is handily outpacing Republicans which places a premium on Trump’s election day turnout.

Trump also has a mega problem with suburban women. They are highly educated particularly adept at sorting out the BS and eschewing manipulation. Black women are also a force for Harris. Black women attend college by the highest percentage of all demographic groups.

Trump is often stubbornly advice loathe to stick to bread and butter issues over election steals because he requires more than his base to win.

Still, his base is noisy and that means something.

The other day I was sipping a cocktail at a bar when three Trump supporters stooled up. They were particularly animated about Trump winning. One of them, who said he served 18 years in the marines, asked who I thought would win the election. “Put a gun to my head and I’ll say Harris” because of the early vote turnout.

The marine was not happy about my prognostication. I explained I worked for Trump for about five years – that usually adds civil discourse and context to the conversation.

“In 5 or 10 years,” he predicted, “we will have a civil war in this country.”

I thought about January 6, that came pretty damn close, so maybe it might mean sooner.

The marine reminded me that the United State has more civilian guns than people. No other country has more guns than people population.

“All my men are ready,” he explained, meaning the gun owners he served with. “When that time comes we will be ready.”

Sobering words if democracy means anything.

  1. The way that the polling information is collected — first it must be “randomly” solicited and then voluntarily and truthfully presented by those solicited — leaves a lot of room for inaccuracy. (Just as Hillary Clinton and her supporters discovered about the polls in 2016 election….) Trumps novelty ruled over her stink factor (which, because it involved in-office incompetence, ruled over his moral/ethical stink factor) in that election.

This voter is willing to speculate that only a small number of people are willing to answer polls in this political climate, and only a small portion of that number is willing to answer honestly.

Statistically, 50% of people are of average or higher IQ, which means (assuming that this higher-IQ population is all likely to vote) that only the wealthy, assuming that wealth is an indicator of normal or better IQ, or those who delusionally expect to be wealthy, out of this number (10%, total, at best) will be voting for Trump, the rest will vote for Harris. (Trumps enormous, dangerous incompetence and sedition in office rule him out for all intelligent, thinking voters — except those who stand to make $ from his rigged economy… His deranged, hyperbolic babble on the campaign trail can appeal only to those of minimal understanding — modest IQ — who believe that his talk is directed at uplifting the “little guy”…) So that gives Harris 40% of the possible vote, straight up. The other 50% of people will be much less likely to vote, but some of these will vote, and, having swilled the Trump Kool Aid, will be voting for Trump. Let’s say about half of these lower IQ voters, or 25% of possible voters, will vote for Trump, and maybe about 10% will vote for Harris (because she “seems nicer).” So we can deduce that about 35% of possible voters will be voting for Trump and about 50% for Harris.

So it seems that despite what the polls would say, basic logic would indicate that the election goes to Harris, with her proportion of the votes cast being about 59% to Trump’s 41% — or about 60%-40% in round numbers….

On the VP side, Vance can only pull Trump down among those not in the Trump base, and the rational/benign, normal, intelligent Walz can only help Harris — so the VP side does nothing to rebalance the above equation in Trumps favor/against Harris….

Harris-Walz, by more than a length, on 11/5/24.

  2. IDL Lennie, perhaps it is close because your tread/commentary is not a feature of the current sitting Democrat president. Are you making sound like a negative. 🙂

Biden: … more border patrols and asylum officers.

Trump: I don’t know what he really said at the end of that sentence, I don’t think he does either.

    Biden: we finally beat Medicare.

Trump: Yeah he did beat Medicare, he beat it to death. 🤣

To be fair, How is this close? speaking of Guns,

  3. Bridgeport friends,
Preying upon the insecure? Offering lies or conspiracy theories with little or no basis in fact and without evidence? Finding those of adult age who have a genuine grievance but do not understand to whom or how to present it, where it might get attention? Playing the blame game to create room in a voter’s mind to be on the “winning side”, supposedly to get America great again (without understanding what period in history is being described)? Accurately? With facts, numbers, etc.? Or playing the personal grievance card to win voters to your side, participating in rallies where emotions are aroused, leaving undisclosed, the actual plans and metrics for success will be accomplished?

Is that the concept, essentially? Backed by genuine right-wing radical groups in many states that have taken over the National Republican Party and funded it for, and by the wealthy, to sustain their personal privileges, current tax preferences, opportunities to earn and pass family wealth privately, free businesses from regulations, with Supreme Court decisions to privilege their operating corporations, and even cloak 501c type organizations in secrecy, but robustly!! Say hello to the silent Libertarians among us. Hiding in plain sight (but no lawn signs), unwilling to come out for truthful conversations, and infecting to genuine sickness, the American body politic.

Election day comes soon. Totaling of all the ballots cast takes time. Don’t you wish your vote counted this year? And then what happens when the Electoral Count system seeks certification in a timely fashion? Keep you safety belt fastened. Time will tell.

  4. Lennie,
    Enough already!
Prior to Biden’s decline becoming obvious, the most common refrain heard was “Are these two guys the best this this country can come up with?’

Unless totally, partisan, when it was Biden versus Trump, and now that it’s Trump versus the candidate annointed by the Dem Backroom, you have to vote for who will do the least harm. Hell of a platform.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Hard to know who to hand the rock. Candidly, both sides employ the same tactics, so conniving, victory at all costs, duplicitious, etc.. A benevolent dictatorship is starting to look pretty good…As long as I’m the benevolent dictator.

As to your three barroom Trump supporters, there will be no Civil Wat and Jan. 6 was a ridiculous riot, not a Coup. You need to start hanging out in better bars.

  5. Denis,
You relate the possibility that “a benevolent dictatorship is starting to look pretty good”. But when a dictator or autocratic aspirant shows little daily sign of caring for any human besides himself, then benevolence is beyond expectation. Just about pure power. And democracy, which depends on the people using voice, intelligence, and participation in governance practice, regularly fails in practice.
The events of January 6 may appear to you as a “ridiculous riot” if you merely focus on those few hours covered by video for all. However, when you relate the pre- and post- January 6, planning and follow through by Trump campaign workers and advisors, much of which became known to the broad public during his second impeachment and since, from former Trump enthusiasts, now providing testimony in court cases based on current charges they face.
Perhaps you wish to comment as a long serving Commission member on the number of years of service, or terms, by a Board or Commission member is ideal. How is such service evaluated, if at all, to be in the puclic interest. What forms of training, initial and/or specific, is currently encouraged by the City? Can you explain why so many current Board and Commission members are listed serving expired terms? Time will tell.

  6. John,
You gotta relax a bit. By the way, “Benevolent Dictator” is sarcasm, irony.

Not sure why you bring up Commissions. We had some serious conversations years ago abour the shortcomings. Nothing has really changed. While not excusing, guess it all comes down to One-Party government. Seems the case in Bridgeport, CT and a host of other Blue cities and States.

  7. Let me assure you, I am relaxed, working on improving what you and I discussed years ago abouts Boards and Commissions. I appreciate your comment about things haven’t changed, much, because ONE PARTY government holds almost all of the power and that allows for corruption to grow, like rust on metal, no one is attempting to polish our practices or hold them up to light.
However, a couple things have changed, if you’re a renter there is a Fair Rent Commission, resurrected from years of “dead in plain sight” but now responsible to answer quality of life and rent amounts from local residents who seek justice.
Success Village “follies” has not been a hoax and is now calling for lots of City attention, including taxpayer revenues, because the counterpart of Fair Rent Commission, called Fair Housing Commission. Time will tell.

  8. The Republican Party used to be just a regressive, “constipated” party in need of a social, ExLax festival. Now it is a (very) low-intelligence, morally bankrupt party that is sure to disband after being thrashed and handed its figurative, microcephalic head on a tin plate on November 5.

It is just unbelievable to listen to the Trump-Vance verbal (mean-spirited, idiotic, dangerous) diarrhea in the context of thinking that anyone of normal intelligence is actually believing it.

Starting rumors of the government controlling the weather and then deliberately not helping victims of the weather disasters in order to confiscate property — dangerous, low-intelligence propaganda material intended to get the simple-minded out to vote….

It is not a sign of intelligence or any degree of higher education to be leaning toward Trump and the Republicans. Only the very wealthy have a rational (albeit, morally bankrupt) reason to think in terms of electing Republicans to federal office this election season.

Republican Party, DISBAND! You’re a dead (the Kool Aid has E-Coli), but still dangerous party — like stored nuclear waste. Hopefully your half-life is very, very short.

    Harris-Walz wins!!! 60%-40% — popular and Electoral College votes — over Trump-Vance.
