Chief Porter To Appear On Panel Promoting Community Relations

Police Chief Roderick Porter is scheduled to attend a panel discussion April 17, 4 p.m. at the Bridgeport Public Library focused on police/resident communication. One of the organizers Victor Jones, writes on his Facebook page

Aim: A social action initiative geared towards developing, strengthening, and revitalizing positive encounters between the community and authority figures. This event will contain a great group of panelists prepped to share experiences from both sides of the spectrum.

Jones graduated from the University of New Haven with a B.S. in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement. He’s also a member of the fraternal organization Omega Psi Phi.

Porter has been a vocal proponent of strengthening community relationships. He recently reinstituted walking patrols and hosts a weekly Facebook live segment that shares information on the inner workings of police work.

    1. Jon, that the usually the problem in politics, and it is their number political play in their playbook pitches. Things that always sound good, but far too often bares no or little fruit. Sometimes they do even prove the seeds to do so outside the conjuring support/side/agenda/idealogy that tends to only bares fruit for them, internally/politically.

My take on this is it’s a public political forum to strengthen the perception of crime in the city. Or at the very least counteract it during this election year. We had, I believe, a few homicides, not counting the recent domestic homicide.

Not to mention a triple shooting that kicked off the summer/warmer weather season where large crowds start to gather and hang out which ended up with shots fired.

Community policing sounds like a good idea but was does it really even mean? Every cop needs/or should be engaged in/with the community that they police, but let’s face it, how practical is it for Cheif Porter to have cops walking the beat, up and down Madison Ave, Stratford Ave, or any streets in the Port, considering they don’t have the manpower to police the calls in a timely manner?

Outside of community events where police can come to and interact with the community, foot patrol seems to be a waste of manpower. Manpower that the BPD is lacking.

Something more like our current bulk trash pickup where community events organizations call up for cops to be present to engage the community events to engage the community as means of “community policing” Dispatch on-duty officers for an hour or so and rotate them with others for a few hours such events to engage the community outside of the policing/authority them.

Shit like that perhaps could make sense as a way to develop, strengthen, and revitalize positive encounters between the community and authority figures.” But just walking the beat, I don’t see it.

But at the end of the day, generally, cops don’t interact with the plebes outside of policing and being that authority figure/policing them. A state of being that nobody tends to like, Even cops don’t like someone having authority over them. Thus lies the true nature of the problem.

Though, I could see cops riding bikes on some of the essential visible arteries like the Parks, downtown, and perhaps some more active crime hot spots, as a countermeasure.

On second thought, The Port PD will probably F-it up somehow. 😂

  1. Keeping up with traditional campaigning, crime has always been a platform for the challengers and an Achilles Heel for the incumbent. I guess to Lennie’s point, Porter being the Logical Choice seems logical with three people being shot and the recent homicides in the Port. 🙂

Gomes, Moore, or Daniel can’t seem to go too hard on crime (Porter) without alienation the Black sentiment/vote.

Though to be fair it wouldn’t play well to attack a Latino Woman either, considering Latinos are the largest voting block in the Port. JS
