Watch: Groundbreaking For Future Bassick High School In South End

News release from Mayor’s Office:

This morning Mayor Ganim joined Superintendent Testani, BPS Board of Education and School Building Committee members, City Council members, Bassick High School Principal for the demolition of the former “Bodine” building on the University of Bridgeport Campus as it will now be home to Bassick High School.

The development of a new Bassick High School has been in discussion and planning for several years. This effort has been a combination of state and local partnerships to find a premium location that will provide students with optimum academic space, an athletic field as well as conditions for students to remain in school while a new facility undergoes development. Most exciting and noted by local officials is that Bassick athletic teams will finally have the opportunity to practice and compete on their own field.

Mayor Ganim stated, “This project is happening today in large part because of the clear vision and commitment by the board of education, committee members, and the Superintendent. These school buildings become monuments, centers for learnings, but most importantly a place where students will receive their diploma for the next few 100 years.”

The new building will house both Bassick High School and Bridgeport Military Academy students and is designed for a peak enrollment of 1,237 students. The 4 story-high building will be fully equipped with a gym, auditorium, and an athletic field with 950 seating capacity, similar to that School Portable Seating. The building will be raised to bring the first floor out of the flood elevation. Construction documents are being finalized in the construction phase of the project with occupancy in 2025.

The building will include the programs from Bassick High School and the Bridgeport Military Academy

— Liberal Arts
— Law Enforcement
— Firefighting
