Valerie Sorrentino, Dedicated Public Servant, Courageous Mother, Grandmother, Passes Away At 68

For many of us she was our pal Val. For thousands of others she was a key cog in the city’s social services and human resources care and a stalwart to her husband Vinnie and family.

Twelve years ago Val’s closest friend Karen Silvernail extended Val’s life by donating a kidney when Val served as business manager of LIUNA Local 200. Be it government, politics, community activism Val always put in the work. She was also unafraid to speak up to lift up ignored voices in government and politics, even potentially against her own interests.

When I managed political campaigns Val was always someone to count on as top-tier support. Val knew Bridgeport. She was born here, schooled here and worked here.

Her obituary follows:

Valerie Marie Leas-Sorrentino, 68, beloved wife, and devoted mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at Duke University Hospital on December 6th, 2024 from a courageous fight against liver and kidney disease. The daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Leas, Valerie is survived by her husband of 40 years Vincent Sorrentino, her brother William Leas and wife Janice Leas, her son Vinny Sorrentino and his wife Jenelle Sorrentino, her daughter Vanessa Nieves and her husband Daniel Nieves, and her step-daughter Christy Sorrentino. Valerie is also survived by her 3 adored and cherished grandchildren Xavier Michael, Parker Rose, and Cameron Joseph. Valerie was affectionately known as “Gigi” and loved being a grandmother. She was always present, joyful, and full of hugs and kisses. Gigi’s house will forever be the most comforting and loving place for everyone.

Born in Bridgeport, CT on September 2, 1956, Valerie attended Sheridan School and St. Andrew’s School for primary school, and graduated from Central High School in 1974 where she was a proud High Stepper. Valerie pursued higher education at the University of Connecticut earning her Bachelors Degree and later earning her Masters Degree at the University of Bridgeport. Valerie was an avid UCONN Huskies basketball fan.

Valerie worked for the City of Bridgeport for over three decades where she enjoyed a successful career in Social Services and Human Resources. Throughout that time she established many fond friendships and had countless memorable experiences. After more than 30 years dedicated to her work, Valerie retired alongside her husband and moved to Coastal North Carolina to be closer to her children.

Valerie was a proud Democrat and was involved in several local political campaigns throughout the years. She passionately advocated for equal rights and women’s rights. She was involved in local events and volunteered her time throughout Fairfield County for years, always finding a cause to support. Valerie was a self-proclaimed “sunbum” and loved the beach and summer months. She enjoyed dancing, reading, taking trips, and living an active lifestyle. Valerie was a big supporter of the performing arts, attending several live shows a year, particularly musicals. Her taste in music was diverse, eclectic, and unmatched. She loved to play her vinyl records and made sure to teach her children the importance of good music, good humor, and treating others with kindness and respect.

Valerie was optimistic, positive, and compassionate. She provided empathy and nurturing when people were in need and fiercely took care of her family. Valerie was the biggest cheerleader for her children, whether it was dance or baseball or college graduations and new babies. She was present, supportive, and filled with love and light. She was dependable, consistent, and always there for her loved ones.

Valerie was the recipient of a donor kidney 12 years ago by her best friend Karen Silvernail. She was deeply grateful for this gift and the lease on life that it provided. Valerie was an advocate for Donate Life and Polycystic Kidney Disease. We ask that any monetary support that friends and loved ones feel compelled to give be donated to these 2 causes to advance further research to find a cure.

Although she will be greatly missed, her vivacious and beautiful spirit will live on through her loved ones, and she will forever be credited for being the most influential person in her children’s and husband’s lives.

Memorial services/Celebration of Life information will be provided at a later date. Please contact the family for details.
