Jessica does a great job of taking a group selfie. That gal knows how to activate her awesomeness!
In a related matter, UB Your Selfie is a fantastic headline.
I see four winners: Jessica, UB, Gov. Malloy and OIB.
Steven Auerbach, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy delivered the commencement address and received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of Bridgeport. Steven Auerbach, where was Mayor Finch, you said he would be there for the commencement address by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy?
Ron Mackey, was Mayor Finch not there proudly representing the students’ achievements, the city of Bridgeport and the taxpayers? If so, I will never utter his name on this blog again and will utter his name just once in a letter to the editor and stop wasting my breath being his lone supporter on this blog … please verify.
Steve, Finch did not attend, but UB generally does not invite elected officials to commencement unless it’s to deliver a graduation address. Many other times, however, UB has invited Finch to various events and he has declined.
Well Lennie, I am on the fence with this one. I believe the Mayor of the City has an open invitation to attend. If the University doesn’t voice disgust and Governor Malloy doesn’t voice disappointment, then who am I to judge, as Pope Francis said. I would just say I am disappointed. I would assume John Fabrizi, Mary-Jane Foster and many in the political realm are thrilled he didn’t show up. I’ll bet the majority of Bridgeporters are not happy with this cold shoulder to an economic engine in the South End. Now all they get is a new gateway … Marina Village.
I haven’t heard here of Mayor Finch actively working against the school while mayor.
He hasn’t done anything to support it either, I grant the point. It is well taken.
Symbolically, the mayor’s feelings makes things a little tougher for the university. But the mayor’s disdain is out in the open. It is easy for UB supporters to explain away the mayor’s feelings.
Only in Bridgeport contributes regularly to negating the personal feelings of Mayor Finch regarding the University of Bridgeport. I am glad for it. I join it.
The mayor does not have to be at UB graduation because of his feelings. I’m sure the students didn’t miss him. Again, it is nice symbolism for the chief executive of the community to attend if he was invited.
But let us assume without prejudice one way or another the mayor was invited and he declined to attend because of his personal feelings. This decision only hurts him politically–maybe. It does not hurt the university or the community.
It’s dumb, Bill. Give it up. The South End agreed with you in 1990. I agreed with you in 1990.
Mr. Mayor: You are acting like a stubborn old man. I’m too close to the same age as you are. Next thing you know, they’ll be calling me a stubborn old man about something or another.
I will say this, it is common decency for the mayor to work with both UB and the University of Bridgeport. He is just a jerk, plain and simple. He really doesn’t give a damn about Bridgeport, as a matter of fact he is lockstep with your old employer the Connecticut Rag.

Should I even bother to ask whether Finch showed up?

Steve, get off the freaking fence, you will hurt yourself.
Sorry, Andy. For now the view on the fence is better than any other option.
The mayor’s actions appear to be symbolic.
