The City’s Political Wonderama

State Rep. Auden Grogins hosted a who’s who of city political figures at her Black Rock home the other night on behalf of Connecticut Speaker of the House Chris Donovan, Democratic candidate in Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District that takes in portions of Fairfield and Litchfield counties. One of Donovan’s opponents Dan Roberti is the son of former Bridgeport State Rep. Vinnie Roberti. The incumbent congressman for that district Chris Murphy is running for the U.S. Senate seat occupied by Joe Lieberman who’s not seeking another term.

The 2012 presidential campaign cycle is shaping up with all kinds of wild and crazy rumors (OIB will be happy to fan the flames) about that one running for this and this one running for that. Could Grogins, the Blonde Banshee, face a primary challenge from Jim “Sonny” Fox, one of her Black Rock neighbors? One thing is for sure, if Fox runs it won’t be boring. The campaign could turn out to be a modern version of Wonderama. Simon says!!! (Does anyone remember Sonny Fox’s reach-for-you-guns routine? It was a surefire way to toss a bunch of the kids out of the game.)

Grogins shocked the political establishment in 2008 when she dispatched State Rep. Bob Keeley, the longest-serving legislator in the city’s history, in  a primary. Fox came up short last week as a candidate for City Council in the city’s 130th District. Grogins’ 129th Assembly District covers Black Rock, the West Side and portions of the West End and North End.

Donovan, as House Speaker, can leverage his legislative peers for a base of political support and moolah. What are friends for, right? They, in turn, rely on him to help send back goodies to their respective districts. What’s a House Speaker to do, right?

  1. I know my post is not relevant to this article, but I wanted to vent. I guess congratulations are in order for Dennis Scinto on his primary victory for Sheriff. But is he able to perform his Sheriff duties while at work for the city during the day, in the city vehicle??? I have noticed he serves paperwork, possibly subpoenas, while using the city car. Shouldn’t he be doing his ACTUAL job, not the one he makes extra $$$ for?

    1. Tom, as I see it, a Sacred Cow is a Sacred Cow. They all will be around for the next FOUR YEARS! With all their deceitful behavior. Get used to it. Same s**t, different day. Sad but true.

  2. I voted primary day after work and brought Jim Fox a coffee. I asked him if he was considering a run in the future. He laughed and said that depends on the “BAGMAN.”
