Stamp Of Approval For Mr. Barnum

On Wednesday, July 2 at 2 p.m. the Barnum Museum will be commemorating P.T. Barnum’s 204th Birthday at his Museum for the first time in four years. The United States Postal Service Vintage Circus Posters Stamps will also be dedicated in honor of Phineas Taylor (P.T.) Barnum, who was born on July 5, 1810 in Bethel CT and died April 7, 1891 in Bridgeport CT. Barnum was a one-term mayor of Bridgeport and four-term member of the Connecticut General Assembly. Everyone is invited to celebrate this day at the wonderful museum he left to Bridgeport.

Bridgeport United States Postmaster, Gary Thompson will dedicate the new USPS Vintage Circus Posters Stamps at a special ceremony. Thompson will be joined by Kathy Maher, Executive Director of The Barnum Museum, Mayor Bill Finch, and representatives from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. Guests will have the opportunity to purchase the new stamps, receive an official USPS P.T. Barnum Special Pictorial Postmark and enjoy circus themed activities and displays.

Continuing a long tradition, Luigi’s Italian Pastry in Bridgeport will be providing a birthday cake for the guests. The events all take place at 820 Main Street in Bridgeport.

Guests are asked to please bring a non-perishable food item to the museum on July 2. All donations will go to the Bridgeport Rescue Mission to help our Bridgeport families. Free to the public in honor of Barnum’s birthday.

Thursday July 3 and Saturday July 5 – 11a.m. to 3 p.m. – Regular hours and exhibits. The Barnum Museum will be closed on Friday July 4.
