Stafstrom-Led Judiciary Committee Authorizes Police To Destroy Seized ATVs

Street takeovers have taxed law enforcement agencies across Connecticut. House chair of the Judiciary Committee, Bridgeport State Rep. Steve Stafstrom, is among state leaders that have added a new tool, authorizing police to destroy seized vehicles. It has passed his committee for further legislative action.

His co-chairman, state Rep. Steven Stafstrom, D-Bridgeport, said in an email that “since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, street takeovers have emerged as a growing national concern — including right here in Connecticut. We cannot allow this dangerous trend to become the new normal,” he said.

“These illegal takeovers, often involving all-terrain vehicles and other unauthorized vehicles, pose a serious threat to public safety — endangering not only the participants, but also innocent bystanders and law enforcement officers,” Stafstrom said.

“This year, the Judiciary Committee has taken decisive, bipartisan action to address this issue through the passage of Senate Bill 1284,” Stafstrom said. “This important legislation gives cities and towns stronger tools to combat these illegal events and restore order on our roads. I am proud to have supported this bill in a bipartisan vote, which increases penalties and provides much-needed resources to help communities prevent and deter these reckless takeovers.”
