Republican Elections Candidate Promises To Safeguard Vote, Channels City Ballot Shortage

When you’re trying to gain voter traction, it’s always good to raise the specter of Bridgeport elections, right? In his first general election ad, Republican candidate for Connecticut Secretary of the State Peter Lumaj highlights the 2010 gubernatorial election when a ballot shortage in the state’s largest city created chaos and national headlines.

Three days before the 2010 general election a visit from Barack Obama, in support of Democratic candidates, packed the Webster Bank Arena. Local elections officials had planned for a sleepy, low turnout. Oops! Halfway through Election Day many precincts ran out of ballots setting off a citywide frenzy of long lines, short tempers and city officials copying ballots handed off to police officers for delivery to precincts.

Lumaj, an attorney born in Albania, is challenging Democratic incumbent Denise Merrill.
