rifleFrom Bill Kaempffer, Bridgeport Police spokesman:

This morning, 1/10/2013, members of the FBI Safe Streets Task Force and the Emergency Services Unit executed a search and seizure warrant at 285 Birmingham Street. The target of the warrant, Johnathan “Coco” Colon, 1/29/87, was located in a second floor bedroom. Recovered as a result of the search were a Bushmaster .223 assault rifle and a large quantity of cocaine.

Colon had been named in an Officer Safety Memo issued by Sgt. Jason Amato on 1/8/2013, and is a suspect in a recent “shots fired” incident. Colon has been charged with Possession of Narcotics WITS, Possession of an Assault Weapon, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, and has been remanded to Federal custody.

  1. The above picture is not representative of the returns stimulated by the ballyhooed City weapon buy-back program. And the police may have used informants, undercover, patrol reports as well as general data from the community like that which might be generated were the Police Department to embrace the inexpensive TIPS program. Trustworthy Information for Public Safety has a coordinator in the PD. And since Bill K has come aboard I have spoken with him on one occasion. No interest? It seems this is the way it is. But illegal guns, street violence, youth gangs and the sale of drugs will continue as long as LIMITED means continue to be used. TIPS, an idea from people in the neighborhoods, has not gotten support from City Hall or PD public relations. Curious isn’t it? How many Bushmasters are known to exist in the community and who can provide a TIP without danger to their family? How many Bushmasters have been coaxed with a $200 offer? What makes perfect sense to you? Time will tell.
