I believe if the Reagan era were to be examined in detail, with details concerning White House discussions and Kremlin discussions on that period’s arms race brought to light, we would find we came close to nuclear war as a result of the bellicosity/hyper-militaristic arms buildup (think “Star Wars”) of the Reagan Administration. Just my belief/perception. We’ll probably never know for sure. Trump talks a lot like Ronald Reagan about foreign (political/military) policy, just not in Reagan’s deceptive, avuncular style. Trump does nothing to modulate the tone of his crazy ideas, so the impact of his words is full, immediate and unmodified.

Lennie is correct. Truman did drop BOTH nuclear bombs on Japan. Thew second one dropped after Japan had surrendered.

Japan surrendered six days after the second bomb dropped on Nagasaki. Both bombs were dropped prior to that surrender. Please check your facts.
It was also the only time a nuclear bomb has been dropped during wartime.
These two bombs saved over 500,000 American lives of soldiers who were preparing to invade Okinawa.

They stalled the Japanese surrender because they wanted to test the bombs and Russia wanted to invade Manchuria.
These theories go along with the idea that the US knew about the invasion of Pearl Harbor and stalled the Japanese ambassador so the attach would happen after the declaration of war.
As far as a bloody invasion goes, we could have bombed Japan relentlessly and with impunity as they had no air force and blockaded the island as they had no navy. Their was really no need to drop A-bombs.
