From David Owens, Hartford Courant:
A jury has found former state Sen. Ernie Newton guilty of three counts of illegal practices in campaign financing, but innocent of a charge of witness tampering.
On the remaining counts, including two of first-degree larceny and two of illegal campaign practices, the jury couldn’t reach a verdict, resulting in a mistrial. The state contended that Newton, 58, had five campaign workers sign contribution forms saying they each gave $100 to his campaign in 2012, although they did not actually donate any money, so that the campaign would reach a $15,000 threshold necessary to qualify for $85,550 in matching funds through the state public financing program.

So what does any of this mean? Will Ernie run? Support Joe Ganim on nice three-color marketing pieces? Quietly return to his community and get out of politics? Go to an East End Church, apologize, get an ovation and join the ranks of we can do it!!!
STEVE, WHAT THIS MEANS IS ERNIE VIOLATED HIS PROBATION AND COULD GET SENT BACK TO PRISON TO FINISH HIS ORIGINAL SENTENCE.
Thanks, Andy. I’d hate to see Ernie get sent back to jail.
Steve, you do not kick people when they are already down, unless of course you are a Bridgeport police officer in Beardsley Park.
If this were Mayor Finch, Mayor Boughton or Mayor Lauretti, this would have never have gone to trial. It would have been addressed by the SEEC.
Maria, I understand your disgust with Finch. I do not, however, understand at all your support for felons and convicts and still feel Finch is more repulsive. It does not at all make sense to me but I do appreciate your position. I am just confused.
I do believe convicted felons deserve a second chance. I just don’t believe they should work directly with children if they are convicted of a sexual, drug dealing or violent crime.
They wanted to get Newton and they got him.
