Mario Testa seeks another term as town chair. Will he have a challenge?

Democratic primaries in three town committee districts will take place Tuesday, but one missing influential piece, so far, anyway is the lack of absentee ballot activity.

As of Wednesday the Town Clerk’s Office reports 42 ballots have been returned among roughly 400 requests, about half of those coming from the East Side 137th District.

The array of state arrests of campaign operatives for election abuses have also placed a dent in absentee harvesting in some areas.

The other areas with primaries the 130th Black Rock/West End District and the 135th Whiskey Hill/North End.

The top nine vote producers among the slates combined win election. It’s not slate takes all.

The 90-member Democratic Town Committee conducts party business, elects officers and endorses candidates for public office. The election of officers will take place about one week after the primaries. Long-serving Chairman Mario Testa is seeking another two-year term.

The Upper East Side 138th District incumbents led by District Leader Kevin Monks avoided a primary when the challenge slate withdrew following a personality snafu between City Councilwoman Maria Pereira and ex town committee member Tony Barr.
