This item appeared on Tuesday’s Civil Service Commission meeting agenda:
City Clerk PT, Assist. Special Project Mgr. Lucille Bruno 15 hours/week
Lucille has spent a good lifetime in public service most notably as Democratic Registrar of Voters chosen by party regulars. She and her family were vocal supporters of State Rep. Chris Caruso for mayor over Bill Finch in 2007. What’s changed?
In fact there was a pretty good give and take between the Bruno family and Finch supporters during and after a mayoral debate between the two at Playhouse on the Green in 2007 just prior to the primary Finch won by just 270 votes.
Don’t ya just love city politics? Let’s be friends and you’ll get a city job (even if it’s just 15 hours). But this hire has been a hot topic in political circles for weeks as the city lays off personnel.
Democratic Town Chair Mario Testa hosts a fundraising soiree at his Madison Avenue Restaurant Tuesday night. I’m sure Lucille will be one of many topics. Stay tuned.
*** She knows the job no doubt & is a stickler for doing things right, that’s for sure. And it certainly helps Caruso should he run again & if she supports him. However, it sends a wrong political message to those Bpt employees who have been fired or laid off by this present admin! *** SOS *** WHAT JOB FREEZE? ***
What makes you think she knows the job? Do you have firsthand experience of her “doing things right?” She’s another political hack looking for a handout. Her whole family is on the payroll. Even had her daughter and granddaughter working in the registrar of voters dept with her. She is an example of old-school politics at its worst.
*** Don’t need first-hand experience, what dept did the woman retire from? How long did she work in that capacity? She’s old-school politics & knows the ropes & players, no? It may or may not come back to bite the Mayor in the derby should he run again. However time will tell! *** Nepotism @ its best, no? *** FORGETABOUTIT ***
Let’s see, we laid off one of the employees in this department. Now we hire a person with a city pension to work part time. What ever happened to double dipping? This is really small potatoes in the overall picture but it sure looks wrong. You can add this job to all the others Finch & Company have invented and then look at the non-connected people laid off. Is there anyone out there besides the administration who thinks this is right?
TC, good question, who thinks this is right? Or necessary? Don’t know the lady, glad to hear she knows the job, which is an assumption that we can’t make for most City hires? Glad she’s a stickler for doing things right which is called efficiency!!! The administration is usually questioned about focusing on the wrong issues, and that is a matter of effectiveness. For instance in his first year in office Mayor Finch was happy to parade the financial statistics showing how his predecessors took the $55 Million uncommitted reserve and reduced it to around 20% of that. Today, no one mentions where that number stands, rather telling us about rain barrels, green roofs, community gardens, etc. It is an irresistible form of “three-card monte.” And the public gets angry at the wrong issues and cannot get their council persons to focus on the major items of running a city.
Maybe Blumenthal when next asked about how to create jobs, ought to cite Mayor Finch who runs a revolving door operation it seems, terminating, firing, suspending, hiring, etc. Where is the scoreboard? How do you check it for accuracy? Who trusts those making statements in this administration? Consider your answers closely. How do you feel?
I take offense to the “three-card monte” simile. I’d liken the situation more to the “gypsy twist.” Not everyone can deal three-card monte.
“A pretty good give and take between the Bruno family and Finch supporters during and after a mayoral debate.” Is that what you call it? As I recall, the Bruno girls were downright vicious to Sonya Finch. First they disrupted the debate at the playhouse and then publicly called Sonya a drunk. Of course they had no idea that she would someday be Bpt’s first lady. I’m shocked the Finches don’t remember that night. If someone embarrassed my wife like that I surely wouldn’t reward them with a job. Don’t all 3 Bruno girls work for the city?
She was drunk and would have embarrassed her family but Finch is obviously beyond embarrassment.
Even if she were drunk, does that give the Bruno gals the right to name-call and create a public disturbance at the debate? They obviously thought their candidate Caruso was a sure winner or they wouldn’t have risked such behavior. Others on OIB remember that night. I doubt that Finch and Sonya forgot. Back then only two of them had a city job. Now all three do. There’s no shame in politics apparently.
This administration makes me ill. They have spent 2 years screwing the employees and rewarding the people who screwed them. I for one can’t wait to get rid of ALL of them once and for all.
Sure the city may have some financial problems but the way this administration is handling them is amateurish and wrong. It continues and not one and I mean not one council person has publicly stepped up.
Town committee, if this administration makes you ill then why were you at Mario’s fundraiser? They all sleep in the same bed, one in the same. Lucille Bruno got that job because Mario ordered it. Finch hired a Caruso backer whose daughters dissed his wife BIG TIME at a public forum. He would not have done that on his own; no, he was given his marching orders and he fell right into step. That’s what’s wrong with this city when a man like Mario can call the shots that govern a city. Poor Sonya, her man has no balls.

Responding to your point and how on point …
I don’t think anybody at OIB would disagree that the call for Lucille came through Mario … That is the state of governance in Bridgeport.
So perhaps you might want to envision a City not run by Mario … Do you think that is doable?
Harley I sure was at the pasta night. There are other candidates who will be running for office other than Finch. No matter what I will work against Finch. Sometimes you get more done by working on the inside.
Let’s put the cards on the table. Mario is a friend of mine even though we don’t agree on many political things that have been happening. We don’t agree on many of the candidates who are running and will be running next year. If people don’t like that, tough.

To your posting
TC,
You mean there might be a chance for a candidate who Mario doesn’t anoint?
*** Was the DTC machine better when Stafstrom was chair? Lennie should do a OIB comparison of the two & other chairs in other urban cities to see just what it takes to be a successful political chairperson of a T/C. *** Damned if you do & damned if you don’t? ***
Mojo in Bpt a successful chair is measured by how many jobs you can get your cronies and how to keep your redheaded girl working selling hotdogs at the Eisenhower center putting the profits in a personal checking acct. Her job also was to throw the vets out of the bldg and let her bike-riding policeman son sleep in the office during working hours.
