Judge To Decide Vallas’ Certification Issue To Serve As School Chief

Superior Court Judge Barbara Bellis, who placed Mary-Jane Foster on the ballot in 2011 when her petition signatures to qualify for a Democratic mayoral primary were rejected by elections officials, now has another big decision to make regarding Superintendent of Schools Paul Vallas’ credentials to serve. One day after the city’s Board of Education voted to make Paul Vallas permanent superintendent of schools, a judge is deciding whether he is qualified for the job.

Although the board rushed through a vote Monday night making Vallas official, Superior Court Judge Barbara Bellis said Tuesday that she will issue her decision within the week following the conclusion of the civil trial before her.

City activist and retired judge Carmen Lopez is suing Vallas, claiming he is not qualified to run the school system of the state’s largest city.

  1. Read the article in the Post. The so-called program Vallas is in is more of a joke than I thought it was. First graders have a more rigorous course of study and there are people who wonder if Vallas even wrote any of those papers. I am wondering how long the professor who oversaw this gets to keep his job.
