The city school board named a former teacher as its chairperson Monday as it prepares to navigate a vast $39 million budget deficit and a potential search for a new superintendent.
The nine-member panel voted 5 to 4 to appoint Jennifer Perez, a Democrat who previously served as board secretary, to the top leadership role for the next calendar year.
The change in leadership comes after former chairperson Christine Baptiste-Perez faced an onslaught of criticism from the public during a chaotic fall semester that has seen multiple teacher protests.
Perez’s candidacy was supported by board members Joseph Sokolovic, Albert Benejan Grajales, Robert Traber and Willie Medina, a close-knit faction that has been sharply critical of Baptiste-Perez’s leadership.
