Education Official Sokolovic Files Lawsuit Against Police For False Arrest Stemming From 2023 Mayoral Campaign

Statement from Joe Sokolovic:

Joseph Sokolovic, an elected official and education advocate, has filed a civil lawsuit alleging false arrest and violation of constitutional rights following a peaceful protest conducted on public property near a political fundraiser associated with the mayor.

The protest, related to alleged absentee ballot fraud occurred in Bridgeport’s Steel Pointe, against the backdrop of Bridgeport’s beautiful waterfront in an area open to the public. The charges were later dismissed, as no probable cause was found. What was alleged at the protest is now fact. Documented guilty pleas by individuals connected to the mayor’s political operation and ongoing criminal proceedings involving members of the Democratic Town Committee and other elected officials all related to absentee ballot misconduct.

“This lawsuit is not about personalities,” said Joseph Sokolovic “It is about what happens when calls for transparency are met with turning our police into agents of oppression.”

Although the false arrest occurred more than two years ago, subsequent guilty pleas and pending trials have established facts that were not publicly confirmed at the time. This lawsuit is being filed now to address constitutional violations that occurred when those concerns were first raised.

Sokolovic emphasized that this legal action is separate from his board governance role and policy collaboration, particularly with respect to school funding.

“Whatever disagreements exist among adults, our children should never be collateral damage,” Sokolovic said. “I remain willing to work with anyone, including the Mayor to ensure our schools are fully and fairly funded.”
