The Hartford Courant has endorsed Trumbull First Selectman Tim Herbst for state treasurer over Democratic incumbent Denise Nappier. Who says the Courant won’t endorse a Republican? Full disclosure: I have served as campaign strategist for Herbst for his first selectman races, but was not involved in his general election for state treasurer. From the Courant:
Connecticut needs a champion of fiscal responsibility who will sound the alarm about a dangerously underfunded pension system and lead the way to fiscal sanity.
The Courant endorses Republican Timothy Herbst for treasurer.

Connecticut’s largest employer has underfunded pensions, which means the state workforce will have to either accept lower payouts (unikely) or become a documented drag on Connecticut’s recovery. I support Tim Herbst’s campaign because selling assets to make pension payments is bad for the state and indicates state employees have been overpromised for too long. I hesitate to say state workers are adding value because I am convinced they are subtracting it.
