An abandoned multi-family house at 121 George Street that had been an eyesore for years was demolished by the city on Wednesday. More from city Communications Director Brett Broesder:
“In Bridgeport, we’re focused on tearing down run down properties such as this one to improve the quality of life for our residents and also creating jobs, housing opportunities and economic development for our city,” said Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch. “With today’s demolition, we’ve knocked down a property that has been a challenge for our city for some time now. Through our anti-blight efforts, we’re improving the appearance of the neighborhood while also ensuring the safety of the kids and families of The Hollow.”
Under Mayor Finch’s leadership, several blighted properties have been transformed into new homes built in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County, most recently at Clifton Place (click here to read more: bit.ly/1IweA7x).
Bridgeport has also revitalized a former blighted property on Knowlton Street into a new waterfront park in the East Side. The former blighted industrial site on Barnum Avenue has been demolished and will soon serve as home to a much needed second train station for the state’s largest city. And construction is underway on a project that is transforming a former blighted property on Stratford Avenue into a mixed-use development that will include 30 one-bedroom units, and a childhood learning center on the ground floor, bringing over 100 jobs and millions of dollars in economic development to the East End (click here to read more: bit.ly/19lWtV6).
“Mayor Finch has been very committed in his efforts to eliminate blight in our city,” Rep. Christopher Rosario said. “121 George Street has been an eyesore in the Hollow for many years. I am glad to see it torn down so that we can turn these distressed properties into new economic development opportunities. The residents of the Hollow will be pleased.”
