City Council To Set Mill Rate, Keeping Taxes Flat

The City Council Monday night will set the tax rate at the current level of roughly 43 mills keeping taxes steady while providing tax relief to qualifying senior citizens. See full agenda and package here

This year’s budget process was tame  by comparison but next year could smolder some noise with state-required revaluation of taxable property. City bean counters hope the commercial projects on line will deliver grand list growth that remained flat this year.

In addition American Rescue Plan federal dollars that aided the budget have dried up.

The good news for the local spending side, however, is the united state legislative delegation that has delivered millions extra each year for the city. The local budget process is always a leap of faith because the municipal spending plan is predicated on what happens during the state legislative session.
