Candidates Sweat Petition Drive For Primary Ballot, Meanwhile Moore Seeks Refuge At Pool Party

Gomes with supporters outside registrar’s office.

When you’re hustling petition signatures to qualify for a September Democratic primary there’s no way to beat the 90-degree heat, unless it’s so hot you throw a pool party like mayoral candidate Marilyn Moore, but then the candidate herself isn’t chasing autographs in a compressed window.

Lamond Daniels inside registrar’s office readies petition drive.

The campaign camps of John Gomes, Lamond Daniels and Moore have spread out across the city in strength-sapping heat seeking roughly 2,000 certified signatures of Democratic electors to face endorsed incumbent Joe Ganim who is knocking on doors for his own cause, a presumed September primary.

Meanwhile, Moore has scheduled a pool party.

About two thousand validated signatures from election officials is the magic number but candidates will need a cushion of hundreds more to offset disqualifications. Sometimes operatives don’t fish where the fish swim. Let’s try outside a grocery store.

“Are you a Democratic, please sign here to get Haystacks on the ballot.”

“Sure.”

Rejected!

Because they’re not registered with the party or they’re a suburbanite or a this or a that.

Opponents now have less than two weeks to reach the signature threshold.

As the endorsed candidate Mayor Joe Ganim’s on the ballot, but he’s still door knocking every day in anticipation of a September 12 Democratic primary.

Every ounce of energy must be thrown into qualifying for ballot access.

  1. Meh, sometimes grocery stores and local businesses with traffic can be effective. I can’t use it for gathering (R) signature as that’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack. While I do usually see a higher rejection rate of about 25% when circulating for Dems or minor parties, I get about 50-60% more signatures (Guestimates).

Have to be strategic though in:

1.choosing locations. Inner Bridgeport, Grocery, post offices etc. absolutely no community events, train stations etc.

    2. Questions asked do you live in Bridgeport, registered with (appropriate) part. Birthday important to check registration.

While this should not be a main tactic, it’s a good way to make productive use of time when no one is answering doors, and in creating a cushion.

  2. Sorry wrote that on the phone. Not sure it’s clear.
Wrote about rejection rate of signatures at stores Vs doors etc (not Dems). My rejection rate at doors is under 10% (guesstimate)
