Attorney Representing Dyshan Best’s Family Claims He Had No Gun, Plans Lawsuit – Inspector General Stands By Gun Report

Last week Connecticut’s inspector general announced in a preliminary report a handgun was found next to a fallen Dyshan Best who was shot by a police officer following a chase. At a Wednesday news conference the attorney representing Best’s family, Darnell Crosland,  declared there was no gun.

A spokesperson for the inspector general says it stands by its initial report, but has not yet released video corroborating a gun at the scene after Best was shot.

Retired Bridgeport police officer Ron Bailey posted this commentary on Facebook:

There is a great deal of mistrust, and I do understand. Having been in 5 armed confrontations, I know the process well. I find it hard to believe the inspector general’s office would misrepresent itself. We will all have to wait for what time will reveal. Prayers to all involved in this tragedy.

From News 12:

Attorney Darnell Crosland announced plans Wednesday to sue the Bridgeport Police Department for $40 million, saying “compelling new video evidence shows conclusively that Dyshan Best did not have a gun” when a Bridgeport police officer shot him to death March 31.

“In Black communities, the protocol is to shoot first and ask questions later – and Dyshan was shot down like a dog,” said Crosland, who represents Best’s family.

Crosland made the remarks during a press conference in his Stamford office Wednesday.

The Office of the Connecticut Inspector General told News 12 Wednesday they’re conducting their investigation “in a thorough and impartial manner,” and that they stand by their preliminary report.

On Friday, the inspector general said a 9 mm handgun was found next to the spot where Best fell after being shot.

  1. So as the website title is named, Only in Bridgeport will an ambulance chasing attorney like Darnell Crosland claim that what Dyshan Best was trying to rid himself of was a vape pen before he was shot by the Bridgeport Police Officer. Then to add insult to injury file a $40 million lawsuit on behalf of Mr. Best’s family seeking restitution for the death of Best. Ultimately the City will settle even though the Officer was found to not have committed any wrong doing in shooting Best because it is cheaper to settle than go to trial. Attorney Crosland will take the larger chunk of the settlement and the family will be given the crumbs and in the end the lawyer wins and the family is still void of Mr. Best because all the money in the world will not bring him back as a result of his actions. Lawyers, the human snakes of this world. Robert T feel free to give your two paragraph response.

  3. The loss of a life is always a tragedy.I would consider Ron Bailey a credible source for accessing the situation. Besides his professional experience,he was also the target of a white supervisor who didn’t like him, treated him unfairly and did his best to have Ron fired. He subjected Ron to unfair punishment which I and many others believe was simply because Ron is black and probably didn’t like the fact that he was also an outstanding officer. Ron prevailed in court and was successful in positive change in the department. No matter what was done to him they could not turn him into a hater. I’m sure that his opinion will prove to be correct.

    1. Joe McLaine, you knew one Ron Bailey. The other Ron Bailey was well know to the above mentioned supervisor as much as I knew both Ron Bailey. Let’s talk about the gun battle Ron Baikey doesn’t talk about. Ron Bailey has a relative who was once charged with illegal possession of a firearm and was under investigation for shootings committed with friends of his. Ron Bailey, stepped in to help his poor disadvantaged black relative. Ron Bailey arranged to turn his relative into a Confidential Informant (CI). No Ron, he wasn’t that “confidential”. In order for Ron to successfully get the charges taken care of, they had to deliver a high profile criminal. Mariano Sanchez had recently been released after serving a long federal prison sentence. Mariano Sanchez, had started trafficking in drugs again. But, that time, it was heroin. Ron Bailey’s Confidential Informant did a controlled drug deal with Sanchez. Law enforcement later got a warrant and conducted a stake-out on Luis Street where Sanchez and a dealer from P. T. Barium housing were arrested when he and Sanchez conducted a drug transaction. Ron Baikey didn’t put that in his book. Did he?

      1. Joel You have your opinion of Ron that I will not argue. I knew Ron before he was a police officer. I am familiar with his honesty and character. He is an honorable man. I actually introduced Ron to Billy Chase (who I have known since we were kids) . Billy Chase was investigating Ron who was being quietly accused of being a drug dealer by a certain supervisor that put the State narcotics task force which Chase was assigned to. I told Billy it wasn’t true, when the investigation was over Chase proved the charge was bullshit. Afterwards Ron and Billy Chase became the best of friends. It was also Billy Chase that took down Sanchez.

Then, Attorney Crosedeyes produces the videos we all saw last week. The last words out of Best’s mouth was a confirmation of where the incident location was. The location where the 911 caller reported seeing a man with a gun and leaving in a black vehicle just minutes before.

Crosedeyes, points out the vape in Best’s hands before he was shot after running, about half a block away. The Remy bottle is a good clue as to Best’s state of mind–he was under the influence. He behaved, reacted, and ran as such, leaving just Attorney Crosedeyes with his hands extended for a few bucks. Don’t drink and ride while carrying an illegal 9.

  5. A short time before the raids on #1 Family. Billy Chase wearing his little girly ear ring (remember that?) attended a party at Mariano’s home on Indian Avenue. By that time, his cover was blown, but Mariano had already incriminate himself. He was confronted by a couple of Leutenants of #1 family. He denied being an undercover cop. Big Red pulled out the popular $25 glazine seal of raw Perico and said to Chase “If you’re not a cop, here sniff this right here now.” Billy sniffed like a pro, but he didn’t fool me nor Big Red. Billy Chase actually tried approaching me soon after that, by pulling up next to my car on State Street and signaling with his finger to his nose from a 4 door Toyota Camry. I was sentenced to a 5 years suspended after 1 on May 30, 1987. I served my time at North Avenue (just 3 days behind bars); assigned to work with the Building Maintenance Dept. (The French Brothers). I spent all days around the entire Jail and quickly got wind of Law enforcement activities with people serving time and a grand jury offering them get out of jail cards. Those who failed to heed my warnings, got busted. But, Billy Chase and company missed out on a truck load of cash. The good old days!
