Attention Poll Workers: It’s Class Time

What goes on inside polling precincts could mean the difference between a good day and a migraine for elections officials. We never have issues election day, do we? Democratic Registrar Sandi Ayala has scheduled classes for poll workers to familiarize themselves with the electioneering process for the September 10 Democratic primary for Board of Education and four City Council districts. Poll workers include individuals forwarded to elections officials by the campaign camps.

Classes for poll workers to take place at the Registrar’s Office in the Margaret Morton Government Center are scheduled as follows:

Moderators, August 27, 5 to 7 p.m.; official checkers, August 28, 5 to 7 p.m.; assistant registrars, August 29, 5 to 7 p.m.; tabulators, September 3, 5 to 7 p.m.; and ballot clerks, September 4, 5 to 7 p.m.

  1. No offense to our anonymous commenters, but I like this idea. Huffington Post is eliminating anonymous commenting.

“Trolls are just getting more and more aggressive and uglier and I just came from London where there are rape and death threats,” Huffington said in comments to reporters after a speech at Hubspot’s Inbound 2013 conference in Boston. The changeover will come in mid-September, she said.

“I feel that freedom of expression is given to people who stand up for what they say and not hiding behind anonymity,” she said. “We need to evolve a platform to meet the needs of the grown-up Internet,” she said. The current Huff Po system uses advanced algorithms to moderate comments plus 40 moderators, but that is not enough now, she said.

In print, letters to the editor have to include a name, address and phone number in order to be printed. Anonymity, on the other hand, is a shield that allows total latitude to say anything without any personal accountability.

    1. Did they tell that to Mark Twain, Richard Saunders, Silence Dogood or Benevolous? Many of us could not post without fearing reprisals from those higher up. Now stop being such a putz.

  2. Well it is sad you fear your comments would put you in a bad position. To think you couldn’t use retaliation as your battle cry if you had to. I only have the problem with anonymous bloggers who only have negative disparaging comments to those of us who use our names. I know of at least 10 who will not even post here anymore as well as read.

    1. Look, people would say the same things about your ‘pro-Finch, give me a job’ posts if they knew your name or not. It goes with the territory. Using your real name just raises the odds Finch will see your posts and hire you. They have said the same nasty things about me for my pro-Vallas views. That battle cry is not going to help me pay my bills if I get fired. They would probably start watching me real close and get me for some unrelated cause. Proving my termination had to do with my posts would just sound like sour grapes.
Using pen names to criticize the government and each other is an American institution. You must not be a substitute HISTORY teacher. If you can’t stand the heat stay out of the kitchen. After all, none of us are a 12-year-old girl who is being bullied by a big meany. When you use your right of free speech you need to understand the importance of using it appropriately. You also need to understand others may disagree and may not feel the need to be polite, especially when it involves highly charged subjects like politics and religion.

      1. Wow, so this is a very very very interesting post. Another anonymous blogger thinking my pro-Finch posts is a good job. You are beyond pathetic. Now I understand why Lennie and Ray allow anonymous bloggers. If I wanted to work in the FINCH administration I’d call him and I am sure he’d say no. If he wanted me he would have called as well as his henchmen. I will continue writing positive posts about the Mayor as long as he deserves recognition. Apparently he does since I wrote it and proudly put my name to it. It also lets others know as long as I post positive for Finch, I will not be joining any campaigns. Unless of course, I change my mind. I do not follow the same blind path as most posters on this blog. I am not anti Finch. Sorry to disappoint. I am thinking this is probably my last post. The negativity has gotten out of control. What’s more, BOE SPY, I realize my pro-Bridgeport/Finch posts are falling on deaf ears and this audience is too small for me. So I will compose a pro-Finch letter to the editor, and he can thank you, Chosen 1 and yahooy. For some reason some individuals think because you work your ass off for a candidate they own you for life. I know Finch does not hold a grudge toward me and if he does he is a better politician than I give him credit for. After all, Mayor Bill Finch was a staunch Ed Lamont supporter and I forgave him as well as Dannel Malloy. I have enjoyed the blog but it is time to move on. Insults I can take happily when I know the attacker. Time to write a sincere pro-Finch letter and hope you enjoy! Lennie, thank you for allowing me to be part of your blog and allowing me to get on my soapbox regularly. Best Wishes, Steven L. AUERBACH

      2. Really did not understand. “if you can’t stand the heat …” should be the other way around. When I have something to say religiously or politically charged my name is attached. If you choose to respond you have the decency to stand behind your comment with your name or keep your comment to yourself.

  3. So glad my post prompted all the anonymous trolls, thank you all. I AM GLAD I HAD THE ABILITY TO CONTROL THE CONVERSATION AWAY FROM THE ORIGINAL POST. PS BLACK ROCKIN, THE NAME IS STEVEN.

  4. BOE SPY, come on now. “Many of us could not post without fearing reprisals from those higher up,” what could be done to you? Just be a man and say what you want to say and then give your name, feel proud about what you post, don’t hide.

    1. Ron,
You are a retired firefighter, you have my respect. Many people on this site are employed by the City or have relatives who currently are. The city of Bpt is saturated with vindictive SOBs who gladly would retaliate to please their masters.

      A name doesn’t always need a face.

    1. donj, you have to be there right before 8 so when they announce the closure of the polls you can come in. Mind you, during the counting the doors are locked, no one enters or leaves.

  5. And if you are not on the list at the polling place make sure they call the registrar’s office to verify where you are to vote or if you can’t vote in the election. Too many poll workers don’t bother. I worked as a registrar two years ago and one poor woman was sent all over town and finally got the right info because I made a phone call, a phone call that should have been made at the first polling place she went to.

  6. *** Ms. Ayala is serious when it comes to poll worker training, no? This is a good thing and there should be more money and time spent to make sure “all” poll workers are on the same page come election day! ***
