From Mayor Finch:

Mayor Bill Finch and State Rep. Andres Ayala to Kick Off 2010 Census “March to the Mailbox” Campaign

WHAT: Mayor Bill Finch, State Rep. Andres Ayala, members of the City Council, the Bridgeport Census Complete Count Committee, and the Bridgeport U.S. Census Office will hold a rally and news conference on Saturday, April 10 at 12 noon in front of City Hall Annex, to stress the urgency of returning the Census questionnaire and what is at stake if residents don’t follow through.

As of today, a very low percentage of Bridgeport residents have returned their questionnaires, and City officials are deeply concerned about the potential loss of federal funding.

To encourage participation in the 2010 Census, Mayor Finch and State Rep. Ayala have teamed up with the Bridgeport Complete Count Committee and other community representatives to coordinate a “March to the Mailbox” campaign.

The kick-off rally is scheduled for Saturday, April 10 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Following the rally, caravans of volunteers will leave from the Annex to four sites across the city where they will distribute census information and collect completed forms.

Every resident who returns a completed census form at the selected sites (see list below) will receive one of several giveaways, including T-shirts, hats, Bluefish tickets, Bridgeport park passes, Beardsley Zoo passes and Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry passes (while supplies last).

The four rally sites are: Washington Park, Newfield Park, Went Field Park, and Nanny Goat Park. Each site selected is in a city neighborhood with very low response rates.
