A Merry Salute To Friends

Wow, this is the high holy day for me. Up to my orbs in squid, cod, anchovy, shrimp, olives, pignoli nuts, and family. If you hear the fire engines screaming it’s just me beating back the fried calamari.

Five years ago I was in a much different place: Christmas in the slammer ain’t fun. Perspective is a mighty fine present, and OIB provides plenty of that. For some of us, no pain no gain. Thanks to you we’ve got a nice gig here to vent, scream, yell, inform, share and discuss the state’s largest city, a place that’s been good to me.

I’ll be checking in for the next two days, and of course if I hear of anything big I’ll be sure to let you know. Please do the same. We’ll crack open a lot of juicy stuff as we approach 2009. Here’s to Mayor Bill Finch and his family, to every City Council member (even those I picked on), every city employee, the cops, firefighters, public works crews and all OIB readers.

Meanwhile, buon Natale, a merry Christmas to the folks that make OIB special.

  1. Lennie, Thank you for providing us with this instrument in which to vent and thank you for always sharing so candidly your life experiences. You are a good man Lennie Grimaldi–a very good man indeed. And Merry Christmas to you City Kitty and all who share this venue each and every day. Let us hope that 2009 will bring much joy, health and prosperity to our City and provide the Mayor with the strength, wisdom and understanding to make our City great again.

  3. A little Holiday fun:

    One the first day of Christmas the City gave to us a Mayor sitting on a dunce stool;

    On the second day of Christmas the City gave to us two City Halls and a Mayor sitting on a dunce stool;

    On the third day of Christmas the City gave to us three hundred layoffs; two City Halls and a Mayor sitting on a dunce stool;

    On the fourth day of Christmas the City gave to us four stupid staffers; three hundred layoffs; two City Halls and a Mayor sitting on a dunce stool;

    On the fifth day of Christmas the City gave to us five appointee hacks; four stupid staffers; three hundred layoffs; two City Halls and a Mayor sitting on a dunce stool;

    On the 6th day of Christmas our City gave to us 6 dead developments; five appointee hacks; four stupid staffers; three hundred layoffs; two City Halls and a Mayor sitting on a dunce stool;

    On the 7th day of Christmas our City gave to us … (who’s going to do the next 6?)

  4. Obama had to talk to the feds regarding Blago’s Appointment of his replacement in the U.S. Senate.

    “Mr. Balanoff told Ms. Jarrett that he had spoken to the Governor about the possibility of selecting Valerie Jarrett to replace the President-elect” and that the governor had raised the possibility of being appointed Health & Human Services Secretary.” During that conversation, Jarrett and Balanoff agreed “it would never happen,” according to the Obama report.

    If it is true that Obama had talked to no one about this matter, then how did Mr. Balanoff and Ms. Jarrett know that Obama would not appoint Blago as Health & Human Services Secretary?

  7. I’ve been meaning to post this for a while now, and Joel just reminded me.

    The Chicago Sun-Times is not exactly a bastion of impartial reporting. To put it in more local terms, the Chicago Sun-Times is a paper very similar to the New York Post; heavily biased and ultra-conservative. In fact, until very recently Rupert Murdoch, the owner of the New York Post, also owned the Chicago Sun-Times.

    So whenever someone posts an article from the Chicago Sun-Times, consider the source. Just pretend it was published in the New York Post, and you’ll have the correct slant on it.

  8. Joel,

    With all due respect, I’ve learned it’s better to ignore the things in life that are truly just chicken shit … regardless of the attention they might command. Illinois’ most recent political intrigue (who’s right/who’s wrong) falls into that category.

    It’s Christmas! Life would be so much better if we’d focus on a single lesson: Being KIND is more important than being RIGHT!

    Have a peaceful, healthy and happy Holiday Season!
