Puerto Rican Cultural Pageant At Bijou

News release:

The 2017 Puerto Rican Parade of Fairfield County Cultural Pageant will take place on Saturday 20 May, 2:00PM-5:00PM at the Bijou Theater located at 275 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport. The event will draw attention to this year’s theme: The Power and Pride of our Voices. The participants will perform Mi Voz al Son de la Plena–My Voice to Rhythms of the Plena, which is a folksong genre with alternating verses and refrains sung to the accompaniment of drums and other instruments and danced by colorful dressed performers. This will be an afternoon of cultural pride and celebration as young people competing in the pageant take a journey through Puerto Rican history and tradition crowning the winners as king, queen, prince and princess.

Young people from Greenwich, Norwalk, Stratford, and Bridgeport have spent many weeks and hours preparing for the pageant with their parents and family solidly supporting them. One parent summarized the program by stating that they are elated to have this opportunity for their child where she is making new friends, learning and experiencing the essence of their culture.  One of the participants said that she has developed pride in her nationality and the program has helped her find herself.

The Puerto Rican Parade of Fairfield County is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that sponsors various events that are free of charge and open to the public. Benefactors and the work of community volunteers support the PRPFC.
