The Candidates For State Senate, State House Special Elections

The candidates for the February 24 special elections for State Senate and State House are now taking shape. The Town Clerk’s Office following a review of the city’s voter program has conditionally approved school board member Ken Moales and perennial candidate Charles Hare to challenge Democrat Richard DeJesus, Republican Quentin Dreher and Ed Gomes running on the Connecticut Working Families Party line for State Senate.

Following a 26-26 delegate deadlock last week, the chair of the Democratic nominating convention Ed Farrow broke the tie for Dejesus, giving him the endorsement. Gomes has challenged the endorsement on the claim that Farrow’s failure to disclose an attorney-client relationship with DeJesus was improper. A dispute panel with the state party is reviewing the matter.

Sierra Club organizer Onte Johnson failed to secure the 103 required signatures from voters within Connecticut’s 23rd Senate District to qualify. Final approval of ballot access will come this week from the office of Connecticut’s Secretary of the State. The State Senate special election will fill the seat of Andres Ayala, new state motor vehicle chief.

For Connecticut’s 129th State House District to replace Auden Grogins, nominated to the state bench, former State House members Hector Diaz and Bob Keeley and City Councilman Bob Halstead have received conditional approval for the ballot. Toshirea Jackson, a worker with the state health department, did not secure the necessary 32 signatures from voters in the district.

Democrat Steve Stafstrom and Republican Enrique Torres are the respective party-endorsed candidates for State House.

    1. Michael, the candidate you support will have an absentee ballot request form–the city will also provide you with one, or you can go to the city and vote absentee in person.

    2. Michael Smith, I would suggest you going to the Town Clerk’s office at the old City Hall on Lyon Terrace. They could actually let you vote right then and there. You may have to call first to assure the ballots have been printed.

If you are voting in the 129th district for State Rep. please consider my candidacy. Your thoughts are appreciated.
