From State Senators Ed Gomes and Anthony Musto:
SENS. GOMES & MUSTO: BRIDGEPORT GROUPS TO BENEFIT FROM CULTURE & TOURISM GRANTS
Bridgeport – Several Bridgeport organizations will benefit from grants recently awarded by the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, news that state Senators Ed Gomes (D-Bridgeport) and Anthony Musto (D-Trumbull) welcomed today.
“Arts programs enrich our culture and provide links to our shared history,” said Senator Musto. “Despite our economic troubles, we cannot forget the importance of the arts in our community. I’m grateful to the Commission on Culture & Tourism for its support of programs here in Bridgeport.”
“Bridgeport is lucky to have programs such as these that provide chances for our children and families to be exposed to positive influences, like music and theater,” Senator Gomes said. “Arts have an important place in education, but they need our continued support.”
Six city organizations will receive General Operating Support grants, which are designed to strengthen Connecticut’s arts infrastructure by offering funding to arts organizations that have consistently provided quality public service. Those organizations are
• The Greater Bridgeport Symphony — $5,740
• City Lights and Company — $1,329
• The Downtown Cabaret Theatre — $8,845
• Neighborhood Studios of Fairfield County — $13,078
• Original Works, Inc. — $2,837
• Playhouse on the Green — $2,307
Additionally, Action for Bridgeport Community Development is slated to receive a $1,200 grant through the Arts Presentation Grant program, which provides funding to nonprofits, units of state or local government and educational institutions that present events featuring members of the Directory of Performing Artists or the Directory of Teaching Artists.
The Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism was created by the General Assembly in 2003 to bring together arts, historic preservation and tourism in the state. Its mission is to preserve and promote Connecticut’s cultural and tourism assets in order to enhance the quality of life and economic vitality of the state.
