North End Little League (NELL) concluded a busy week of community engagement with its inaugural North End Christmas Tree Lighting, held at Blackham School. The event celebrated the holiday season while giving back to children in need across the city.
The celebration was made possible through the generous support of local donors, including Maz Lawn and Tree, which donated the Christmas tree. The City of Bridgeport’s Public Works Department planted the tree, ensuring it will remain a lasting symbol of community pride for years to come.
At the heart of the event was a community coat drive, during which residents donated new and lightly used coats for children in need. All donated items will be distributed to Caroline House on Bridgeport’s East Side, operated by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Through the generosity of attendees and sponsors, more than 200 jackets were collected to support impoverished children throughout the city.
Reflecting on the significance of the evening, Jose Aviles, President of North End Little League, shared, “This Christmas Tree shall stand as a beacon of hope for our city. Feliz Navidad!”
The evening began with a prayer service and blessing of the tree led by Father Jeff of St. Margaret’s Shrine. The event was emceed by former Bridgeport Mayor John Fabrizi and drew a wide range of community leaders and supporters, including City Council members Michelle Lyons and colleagues, Bridgeport’s current mayor, and the town chairman.
Adding to the festive spirit, 2026 Barnum Festival Ringmaster Tom McCarthy made a special appearance, proudly wearing his signature red jacket in support of the event. Guests enjoyed live Christmas music performed by Rob Jacoby, who generously donated his time and talent, while families gathered to enjoy hot chocolate, warm cookies, and holiday refreshments.
North End Little League also used the occasion to celebrate continued growth and momentum within the organization. NELL is proud to announce several new sponsorships and partnerships ahead of the 2026 spring season, with enrollment numbers on pace to exceed participation levels not seen since the early 2000s.
