After Loss, A Wistful Newton Sticking Around

Ernie Newton, left, and State Senator Herron Gaston shake hands days before the primary won easily by Gaston.

Melancholy after losing handily to freshman State Senator Herron Gaston in Tuesday’s Democratic primary, City Councilman Ernie Newton wistfully pondered retirement the other day from politics.

The mood didn’t last long. When it’s in your blood, it’s in your blood.

The self-proclaimed Moses of his peeps now wants to be the standard bearer of the New Movement Party, an entity started by his friend, the late political operative Charlie Coviello.

Gaston will win November’s general election going away, but winning in politics has a relative aspect. Newton just wants to keep the New Movement Party, now run by Tony Barr, closely connected to the political scene.

From Newton’s Facebook page:

Charlie I could never repay you for all you done for me. You were are mentor for me as a young man starting out in my 20’s. When I came home from Prison you and my family and friends watched me walk out as a free man. You rode to Hartford with me every day to fight the charges the State of Connecticut which we won in the Supreme Court
The least I could do for you my brother is to get the percentage you need to Start your Party The New Movement. If I’m able to do that it would mean more to me than Winning the Senate seat seeing that I’ve already accomplished that Goal.

  1. That’s a great picture of Charlie Coviello who was a political and community activist for many years. He was not pleased with the low count of actual voters in the City relative to the number registered.
I have been encouraging City Council persons to:
    1. Grab a calendar and circle 3-4 dates total in the next year.
    2. Find one or more locations in your District/neighborhood where residents can attend a conversation with you. Safe. Convenient. Good times.
    3. Get word out, social media, signage in prominent places, and conversations with those you already know that you wish to LISTEN to eligible voters telling you with respect what concerns and issues they have,
    4. Time limit to talk for all including Council person.
    5. Someone to take notes about what can be done, when, and how. CIVICS 102 for neighbors.
    6. With confidence, respect for all, and repetition, these community conversations will reveal the well intentioned, public service oriented, unknown but caring fellow citizens who feel they are not welcomed by those in POWER today.
Think about it Ernie. You are a Council person. Voting by those eligible to use their voice is not a big accomplishment for the City to brag about. Lead the way with community conversations. Make them a public thing!! Time will tell.
