Let’s Eat–Bishop Caggiano’s Decree Authorizes Meat On St. Patrick’s Day

Meat-eating Catholics could gorge gullets to the high heavens on St. Patrick’s Day, Friday March 17, courtesy of dispensation by Bishop Frank Caggiano.

The festivities should be rockin’ in more ways than one, Black Rock the center for all the action, including the parade.

As Bernie Taupin’s Bitch Is Back lyrics note: “eat meat on a Friday that’s alright, I even like steak on a Saturday night.”

The bishop’s decree comes with one caveat: “substitute the practice of abstinence of that Friday with abstinence from meat on another day of Lent that is not a Friday, or another equally penitential practice.”

  1. Lennie,
I am writing to thank Bishop Caggiano for reminding me of several things but I FRANKLY did not know that he was a reader of OIB. Perhaps you will pass along my appreciation for this dispensation on the Day of St. Patrick and the way “we” have come to celebrate the day.
“Gorging gullets to the high heavens” is nowhere to be found in his notice, you will observe when you read his DECREE. Rather I see his commentary that Lent is a time for “general moderation in food and drink” as the rest of the year becomes the standard of measurement for ‘moderation’.
Thank the Bishop of Bridgeport for his care and comments for his many constituents from 14-60 and for your personal mission in spreading his noteworthy word. Caring for one’s neighbor on a daily basis during the forty days of Lent in addition to adherence to fasting or abstinence rules may be a memorable activity for practice by all of us, no matter our age. Time will tell.
