  1. The Planning and Zoning Commission on Monday night denied a strip club owner’s applications for two establishments in the city, which have been operating illegally since summer.

    THAT SAYS IT ALL!!!

Why weren’t Cease and Desist Orders issued? A little favor to the GUYS? Wise guys that is.

  2. What happened to Walsh & Baker’s Ordinance to control these establishments? Oh, that’s right, it was tabled as one of the last cowardly acts of the current City Council’s Ordinance Committee. With the encouragement and blessing of City Council President Tom McCarthy, in whose district one of these clubs is allowed to exist.
A little early Christmas present for the boys? Don’t muddy up their zoning applications with a new ordinance. The ordinance can wait.

  3. As a councilman you have been referred to as the only check to an unbridled, all-powerful mayor. A few speak well of you and a few speak poorly.

This most recent post regarding strip clubs seems to be reasonable yet you could not get your ordinance passed. Is it always a corrupt Mayor or cowardly council? Could it be personal animus related to your public demeanor?

With your long service on the Council and now that you are leaving, what are you most proud of, what do you see as a positive accomplishment?

  4. LE,
He doesn’t. But given all his time served and understanding his supporter’s and detractor’s points, I’d just like to know what he sees as his achievements.

I respect Bob and time served but came to think most recently through this blog, he was more concerned with being viewed in media as the only “honest” or “intelligent” voice on the Council.

That could be all wrong, so as he leaves, I’m just curious.

    1. The Prophet is unknown in his own country. Bob Walsh did his homework and wouldn’t allow a mayor or the city attorney to pull the wool over his eyes. He was never a Profiteer!

  5. FBD raises an interesting question that relates to the City Council and specifically the Ordinance Committee. And the question is: just what is the responsibility of the City Attorney’s office in terms of timely and efficient work/response to matters referred to it?

On the night in October just before the election when several Ordinance issues were hitting the panel requiring a vote to move forward, the adult entertainment response provided by legal at the last moment did not allow that matter to be understood, resolved, and voted forward forcing it to be raised again months later in 2012 by the next Ordinance Committee members and the new City Council.

Of course, “Bridgeport Legal” also failed the Ethics Commission that had work submitted in May 2011 which then was lost to posterity from the same mechanism as last-minute response and confusion of Council members. What was truly fascinating to me was the earlier discussion that evening regarding potential City liability regarding improper street abandonments. The presentation by a lawyer from “Bridgeport Legal” revealed the City Charter authorizes a Board or Commission to deal with this subject fully in line with State process, but for some reason not specified, the City has avoided forming the body and appointing residents to serve this important City function. Go figure! If “Bridgeport Legal” can’t prompt government to follow our own Charter and for some reason does not allow the Ethics Commission to retain outside counsel, and at critical times shows up too late with too little to complete other people’s work subject to Committee approval, then you begin to see a pattern of governance letdown. Is it purposeful? Targeted? Does it show the colors of ‘self-interest’ and control? You be the judge and tell your own story. Go to the meetings. They are better than most television. You can see over and over how even well-meaning members of the public get ground up in a process that is not primarily OPEN, ACCOUNTABLE or TRANSPARENT for the most part. Time will tell.

  6. The Bridgeport City Council MUST have its OWN outside counsel, there must be total separation between the legistlative branch (City Council) of City government and the administrative branch (the mayor’s office).

  7. I received an auto-email and auto-phone message to the effect that ~

“The Board Of Education Meeting that will take place tomorrow, Thursday, December 1, at Beardsley School at 5:30.”

    Wow.

  8. *** Bob’s problem at times “might” have been political or the yelling of “wolf” too many times which made some council members start ignoring his calls, but make no mistake his attention to detail and city policy sidestepping was right on point! You can lead horses to water but you can’t always make them drink. He will be missed by Bpt’s taxpayers, no doubt! *** 2012, YEAR OF THE RUBBER STAMP? ***
