CT Post scribe Brian Lockhart has the latest chapter in Bridgeport’s very own wild kingdom.
Ex-restaurateur and Western buff Dan Katz introduced himself to “chicken guy” Christopher Toole late last year and is trying to help the self-styled urban farmer care for his herd at the Bridgeport animal shelter.
“It all comes because I really give a (expletive) about animals and care deeply about how they’re treated,” said Katz, who provided heated drinking water tanks and hay to help Toole’s numerous donkeys, goats, chickens and pigs survive the winter.

Time to put this guy out to pasture.
Any takers at the zoo?
Why do Bridgeport and CT state taxpayers fund this, which is clearly beyond the scope of city or state government responsibility?
The alleged “experimental” part of this is a falsehood. Experiments require a methodology beyond BS’ing.
Will Mayor Finch explain his permitting Toole’s use of public property and facilities … as essential to saving lives … as he has claimed for the 6-figure (more?) driveway and airport upgrades?
If not, then what justifies continuance of the Toole use of public lands and facilities for his private experiment?
From 1/6/14 CT Post article on airport driveway:
… the mayor said the runway upgrades are all about ensuring no more lives are lost.
“That’s what we’re all about–most of us,” Finch said.
Halstead has a problem with being backed into a corner over approving the driveway settlement.
“If you say something, all of a sudden you’re a callous person,” Halstead said. “You’ve got to approve this or otherwise you’re in the way. I don’t like it. That’s brinksmanship.”

No Farms No Food.
Re B’porteur’s comment:
Is someone producing or seriously considering producing “food” for sale from livestock raised at the Bridgeport Animal Shelter?
I believe so and this is a pilot program.
“Bridgeport Animal Shelter” eggs or organic chickens or side-of-the-street-Christmas-tree-fed goats?
Oh yes, that’ll be a big hit at the local green markets, I’m sure … especially in Westport. A pilot study will surely show that.
Maybe Mr. Katz can have the eggs and other “food” products labeled “Bridgeport Animal Shelter” sold to some of the finer restaurants.
Be sure not to miss any Dept of Health and State Ag inspections now.
Who’ll pay for that?
Meanwhile, who’s keeping the city’s budget for Toole’s “experiment?”
Can we require future candidates for mayor to take a common-sense test before being permitted to run for office? This is so utterly stupid … and I’m a Bridgeport Democrat who gardens voraciously and considers green spaces/public garden plots/”plant a row” programs wise and key investments.
