The Police Department wants your meds. On Saturday the Community Services Division will participate in the National Drug Take-Back Initiative with a goal of keeping kids safe and protecting the environment, accepting all expired medication, supplements, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, or prescription drugs in pill or liquid form that you no longer need, according to spokesman Bill Kaempffer. The collection site will be at the Community Services Division at 1395 Sylvan Ave. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Our primary concern is safety,” said Police Chief Joseph Gaudett. “We know the potential for abuse of prescription drugs. In many homes, medicine cabinets or kitchen cabinets are lined with bottles in reach of children and teens.”
The purpose of the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the public about the potential for abuse of medications.
Police say people dispose of unused or expired medications by flushing them down the toilet. Studies, however, show that flushing certain medications can lead to contamination of groundwater and other detrimental environmental concerns.
