Dick Wants To Save Post Office From Closure

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal will visit the city this afternoon (Tuesday) to bring attention to a city post office on the federal chopping block. From Dick:

TUESDAY: SENATOR BLUMENTHAL TO ADVOCATE TO KEEP POST OFFICES IN GILMAN AND BRIDGEPORT OPEN

(Bozrah, CT) – On Tuesday, August 16, 2011, Senator Richard Blumenthal will join local officials at the Gilman Post Office in Bozrah, followed by a visit to the Barnum Post Office in Bridgeport with community leaders later in the day, to advocate keeping both open, as well as to encourage the two communities to voice their support for the branches. The United States Postal Service (USPS) has recently proposed closing the branch as part of a nationwide effort to shut down 3,700 post offices across the country, including laying off nearly 120,000 postal workers, including a number of local branches in Connecticut.

In Gilman, Blumenthal and Representative Joe Courtney (D-2nd District) will be joined by members of the Gilman Family who have been postmasters of the Gilman Post Office for over 80 years in the small village within Bozrah. The branch supports a number of small businesses. Later in the day, Blumenthal will travel to Bridgeport where he will be joined by Mayor Bill Finch and other elected officials and community leaders at the Barnum Station Post Office. Both branches are currently slated for closing.
