Bridgeport’s First Able Table To Be Dedicated At Claytor Academy

News release from RiseUp Group:

The RiseUP Group, Inc. will host a dedication ceremony on Friday, May 16 at 10:00 AM at Claytor Academy (240 Ocean Terrace, Bridgeport) to celebrate the installation of Bridgeport’s first Able Table—a universally accessible, artist-designed picnic table that combines inclusive infrastructure with public art.

The Able Table, designed and painted by local artist Lori Bloom, is the first of five tables being installed in Bridgeport thanks to the support of the City of Bridgeport and the Bridgeport Economic Development Corporation (BEDCO). Each Able Table features an ADA-compliant design with a 36-inch center access space for individuals who use wheelchairs or mobility devices, along with custom artwork that reflects the surrounding community.

“We are honored to kick off Bridgeport’s Able Table movement at Claytor Academy,” said Matt Conway, Executive Director of RiseUP. “This table is more than a seat—it’s a symbol of belonging, creativity, and Bridgeport’s commitment to accessibility for all.”

The table’s vibrant artwork was painted on polytab fabric and sealed to withstand outdoor conditions, turning it into a permanent installation that will serve both functional and educational purposes at the school. Students, educators, and community members will gather at the dedication to unveil the artwork and recognize the collaboration that brought the project to life.

The Able Table initiative is part of RiseUP’s Able Solutions program, which creates inclusive gathering spaces while providing workforce training and public art opportunities throughout Connecticut. In addition to Claytor Academy, upcoming Able Tables will be installed at Skateport, North End Little League, East Side Senior Center, and Home of the Brave.

The May 16 event is open to the public and will include remarks from school leadership, city officials, and project partners.
