Himes’ First Year, And Weicker’s Big Ones

How’s Jim Himes doing?

A little more than a year after gentleman Jim surfed the Obama wave into Congress, almost not a day passes that I don’t receive an ice-pick-in-the-ear news release from some Republican Party organization hammering Himes for supporting most everything Barack and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi have proposed to resurrect the economy. Every now and then I run one for chuckles or because it’s a fit for an issue. Himes’ seat in Connecticut’s Fourth Congressional District had been occupied by Republicans for nearly 40 years until he defeated Chris Shays in 2008. DC Republicans want the seat back, and my oh my has public sentiment turned from one year ago.

Sometimes pols can create their own good fortune, other times luck comes into play. Had Chris Shays (we may yet hear from him) sought to reclaim his old seat I say Himes is toast in November. Had Fairfield State Senator John McKinney sought the seat his father occupied before Shays I say Himes is toast. McKinney has family issues, a divorce, that places his priorities with his children. But Himes, bright and likable, could very well be reelected. Depends on lots of stuff.

The Republicans running against him, led by Shelton State Senator Dan Debicella who was raised in Bridgeport, and former Bridgeport State Senator Rob Russo, are largely unknown along Fairfield County’s Gold Coast, the bastion of Republican votes. That can change with money and a strong message.

It’s hard to be in office a year and claim a steady stream of accomplishments. Things don’t move fast enough in Washington, despite Democratic assurances that the stimulus package would indeed change things. Himes, as a freshman member of the House of Representatives, can’t just snap his fingers and say I need this and this and this and this. He has to pick and choose, and vote for crap he doesn’t like, to get stuff for his district. That’s the way it works.

For Bridgeport, Himes has gotten some stuff done. A few million to tear down the stuck-open Congress Street Bridge, millions more for a variety of job training programs and needy social service organizations. I dare say we will hear more announcements as Himes makes his case for reelection. Constituent services, of course, are crucial to reelection. Voters call their local Congressional office for a variety of stuff. Every time Himes’ district workers help a voter they make a friend for their boss. I’m hearing, however, it’s easier to get Himes on the phone than have an issue resolved quickly by local staff.  My only contact with Himes’ staff, however, is with Elizabeth Kerr, his responsive and dedicated communications director.

Being a congressman isn’t like being a governor with big stones. A congressman is so often at the mercy of others. No one understood this better than former U.S. Senator Lowell Weicker who was bounced from his Senate seat by Joe Lieberman in 1988 and then two years later ran for governor and won.

As governor, Weicker had balls that clanked. There was the day 18 years ago or so that Weicker and his Deputy Chief of Staff Tom Dudchik, now the genial host of the highly trafficked www.ctcapitolreport.com, were tooling around the region. Weicker wanted to do something for Bridgeport. “I remember asking him why the State Police had their barracks in Westport,” Dudchik shared with OIB. “I told him they should move into Bridgeport. As soon as the words were out of my mouth, he was shagging the Commissioner to his office to tell him to move the barracks.”

And it was done. Weicker, with one move of executive power based on a suggestion from a staffer, moved Troop G  from Westport to Lafayette Boulevard downtown. Bridgeport was desperate for a sense of security downtown. Weicker didn’t stop there. He relocated Housatonic Community College from a beleaguered building on the East Side to new quarters downtown across from the State Police. That whole immediate area is safe and clean. Would be nice to have a governor like that again for Bridgeport, wouldn’t it?

Supreme Court Decision Will Drown Out Individuals in Political Debate

WASHINGTON, DC –Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court decision in the case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which overturns long-held limits on corporate and union contributions in campaign financing.

“The Supreme Court’s decision to allow unlimited third-party political advertising practically hangs a ‘For Sale’ sign on the U.S. Capitol, giving corporations, shadowy interest groups, and unions permission to spend limitless amounts to influence elections. This decision undermines the voice of the individual constituents I represent. We need to return to a system of one person–one vote, but this pushes us in the direction of one dollar–one vote.”

Congressman Himes is a co-sponsor of the Fair Elections Now Act, H.R. 1826, bipartisan legislation that would create a voluntary public financing system for federal elections.

When The Message Doesn’t Work, Change The Message, From NRCC

One Year Later, Himes and Fellow Dems Finally Pay Lip Service to Middle-Class Families

Almost A Year Since Democrats Passed Failed Stimulus, Connecticut Middle-Class Families Are Still Asking: Where Are the Jobs?

Washington- As Jim Himes prepares to mark the one-year anniversary of his party’s failed ‘stimulus’ bill, Democrats are trying to switch gears to deflect attention from their trillion-dollar spending debacle. After ignoring middle-class families and small businesses for the past year, President Obama and his Democrat foot soldiers will now attempt to rebuild their credibility with the backbone of America’s economy. In Wednesday’s State of the Union, President Obama will preach a message highlighting a ‘new’ focus on the middle class – messages Republicans have been emphasizing for the past year. Could this newfound recognition of the middle-class be due to the Democrats’ devastating loss in the Massachusetts special election? Or could it be due to their plummeting approval ratings? Either way, Himes and his Democrat friends have the impossible task to rebuild the bridges they have set ablaze over the past year.

“Previewing a centerpiece of Wednesday’s State of the Union address, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on Monday will announce an agenda for middle class families that includes tax credits for child care, lower payments for student loans and automated IRA deposits.”

“As we make our way out of this deep recession, the most important thing we can do for the middle class is strengthen the economy and help the private sector create jobs as quickly as possible. We also must begin to reverse the declines middle-class families saw not just these past few years, but have seen for over a decade: working harder for less; college becoming more unaffordable, health care costs skyrocketing; home values plummeting; and retirement savings dwindling and becoming less secure. There are immediate steps we can take to reduce the strain on family budgets by helping middle class families manage their child and elder care responsibilities, save for retirement, and pay for college.” (Mike Allen, “President Obama, Vice President Biden unveil middle-class agenda,” Politico, 1/25/2010)

Throughout the past year, Democrats failed ‘stimulus’ has continued to receive a failing grade from taxpayers:

“A majority of Americans oppose the economic stimulus program, according to a new national poll.

Fifty-six percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Sunday say they oppose the stimulus package, with 42 percent supporting it.” (“CNN poll: 56 percent oppose stimulus program,” CNN, 1/24/2010)

“For the past year, Jim Himes has been rubber-stamping his party’s failed economic policies while middle-class Connecticut families are left to suffer the consequences,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “Now, one year after throwing mountains of debt onto the backs of middle-class families, Himes’ party is desperately scrambling to salvage the damage they have done with a trillion-dollar spending spree that was nothing more than a political giveaway. Unfortunately for Jim Himes, his party’s mere lip-service to the issue isn’t fooling anyone.”

To help prevent Salmonellosis, always wash hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meat and poultry. Also wash cutting boards, dishes and utensils with hot soapy water. Clean up spills right away.  Keep raw meat, fish and poultry away from other food that will not be cooked. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry and egg products and cooked foods.  Cook raw meat and poultry to safe internal temperatures before eating. The safe internal temperature for meat such as beef and pork is 160° F, and 165° F for poultry, as determined with a food thermometer.  Refrigerate raw meat and poultry within two hours after purchase (one hour if temperatures exceed 90° F). Refrigerate cooked meat and poultry within two hours after cooking.

Salmonella infections can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. The most common manifestations of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.  See a doctor if you or a family member shows signs of salmonellosis.

  1. I stay up until 3:00 in the a.m. to read about some meat recall?
The only Italian Sausage I want to see recalled is Mario Testa. And if we can, let’s recall that big baloney Bill Finch.
Now I’m going to be Leonard.

  2. I have been saying this for months, none of the Republicans will put up margin in Shays. For example in Bpt in midterm election Shays would always put up at least 32% or more in the Park City. I find it hard for a Republican to get 30% of the vote in this midterm in the Park City. I say Himes gets over 70% in Bpt. Now let’s look at a liberal town like Westport that Shays barely won in 2008. I can say we can flip the blue to Democrat easily in 2010. Weston will flip to Democrat in 2010. Stamford and Norwalk will go Democrat also. What I am trying to say is I really do not think Republicans will have a candidate that can appeal to Democrats in 2010 like Shays did. I am no fan of Shays but he was a type of candidate that Democrats would easily cross over to vote for. I know people that voted for Shays in 2008 and sure as hell will not be voting for a Republican other than him. Himes wins in 2010 he has my vote.

    1. donj: Himes was elected on the coattails of Obama. Obama does not run and does not win NO HIMES. The voters that are going to count and decide this election for or against Himes are the independents. So far in the 3 elections held in Virginia, New Jersey & Massachusetts the independents decided all three races. The interesting part was that New jersey & Massachusetts were and still are considered blue states while Virginia was considered a swing state. While the 3 candidates were Republicans they all ran on a different platform than that backed by the national Republican party.
The Dems have not gotten the message yet and that is people are not hung up on health care in fact it comes in behind Jobs (economy), Terrorism and the deficit. The Dems have spent a year on health care and people have had enough of the closed-door meetings. Remember people can’t eat health care.

  3. Hey Lennie, will you be giving us periodic updates on Joe Ganim? Did he find a job yet? Maybe the City can hire him as CFO or CAO or Economic Development Director or Chief of Staff. He can certainly do better than the people holding the positions now. Or maybe he can be hired to read Ruben Felipe’s emails and explain them to him. Or maybe he can suggest alternate sites for the girls’ juvie jail.

    1. Maybe Smokin’ Joe Ganim could get a job as a life skills counselor at the girls’ juvie jail. You know, advise them on the finer things in life: custom-tailored clothing, cases of expensive French wine, etc.

    2. Some people just don’t get it. Joe Ganim gave us the Juvenile Jail downtown in order to get more kickback money from another property owner up the road.
He has a history of picking juvie detention centers to make a personal profit off of the deal. Wake up would you and quit blowing smoke up people’s asses to praise a convicted felon.
Why doesn’t the city hire Joe Ganim as a janitor? He can start cleaning up the city one broom sweep at a time.

  4. “And What About Chris Shays?”

It looked like yesterday nobody could give a click about Shays. “The fundamentals of the economy are strong. No one can disagree with that!” The fundamentals of Shays’ economy are strong and why would he want to come back except to pay off his old bills? Good for him.

Where’s Mike Freimuth? Did he get bought out of his Stamford gig? Next station stop could be BPA or The Donald’s job. This could be another part of Finch’s Recycling Program. All A Bored!

    1. Frankly, I would welcome Freimuth back and so would a lot of other people. Ganim, in spite of the occasional kickback, was a damn good mayor who hired, for the most part, damn good dept heads. I say bring back the Ganim appointees, just get rid of the Fabrizi and Finch losers.

      0
        1. Every one of those “good” department heads facilitated the Ganim criminal enterprise.
Murphy, Marsilio, Freimuth, Jerry Barron. The Feds had more than enough evidence to involve each and everyone of them but they had put together an ironclad case without them.
Murphy was physically sick over it and his nerves were shot. He was sick with fear that he was going to be charged.

  5. “Bridgeport Now” Tue Jan 26 at 8pm on Ch88
Follow up on countdown: Governor Rell vs. The people of Bridgeport. Just when some of the zoning issues had been resolved, Rell decides to put prisons in residential neighborhoods. But who knew what when seems to be at issue. If Finch new, did he know where it was proposed? If so, why didn’t he say anything?

Since Lennie mentioned Himes, he could be in trouble if he doesn’t stand up for what the Dems voted him in for. And the Democrats under Obama, I can’t figure this out. Obama has appointed what seems to be mostly former Bush/Reagan staff. This is including what you see in today’s newspaper: both cyber czars are former Bush staff, both of them! What, there is no one who is a Democrat who was qualified? This is amazing.

And most of the military and financial leaders are from Bush and Reagan. For example, Bob Gates worked in the Reagan Administration, and actually was number two in charge when they ran guns and weapons to fundamentalist extremists, in the name of fighting communism, in fact they opened the prisons in the middle east to send people to Afghanistan and much of the fundraising network the USA set up is still functioning today, thanks to Bob Gates, and Obama hired the guy back! And as for fighting commies, today we depend on communists to borrow money from ($800 billion) China, so we have to be careful not to upset them too much. You figure.

But the latest struggle will surely cost Democrats including Himes if the right decision is not made: Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke should not be appointed. If so, it will have been almost 40 years of nonstop Republican economists and our economy has collapsed. Bernanke did nothing when the economy showed clear signs and red flags, saying for example the subprime crisis was gonna go away, and he was negligent with other issues too.

Why does Obama only seem to want to appoint Republicans? Either he is weak or thinks Democrats are weak. Himes will not win again unless he puts his foot down on issues Democrats voted Obama in for.

By the way, that ghost at the Majestic is a bit pesky. I finally was able to capture a shot it appeared in, but when I blew the picture up to get a closer look, taped it and then went to capture, it disappeared. I will show you one of the shots tonight, with that guy Meyer’s voice over the inside of the Majestic. Hey, someone was saying it’s haunted maybe not ’cause of the Indians but ’cause of the Vaudeville theater history, don’t know about that.

  6. Bridgeport Now; Himes voted on the major Obama issues just as he was told to do. Put his foot down? He is a freshman congressmen. He has no pull and could stamp his feet all day to no avail. How was the economy under Clinton? He falls within that 40-year period. Whats going on here is that Obama got bogged down with Health Care and lost his mandate. He still has a strong Democratic base but he has lost the independents, the group that put him in office.
