Congratulations to Coach Barry McLeod and the Central Hilltoppers who stormed back from an 18-point halftime deficit to defeat top ranked Fairfield Prep for the state high school championship.
The second-seeded Hilltoppers rallied to stun No. 1 Prep 76-73 at Mohegan Sun Arena for their first state title since 2010 and fifth all-time. It’s the Hilltoppers’ third championship under McLeod.
“This has got to be at the top,” he said. “The magnitude of the game, the fact that it’s the No. 1 team that hasn’t lost all year, the way they’ve had their way and manhandled everybody, it’s got to be the best.”

Congrats to Central Basketball. Thanks for representing Bridgeport in a championship manner. What a comeback.
What a team! Way to go Central, way to go Bridgeport!
Mr. Fardy, thank you for your congrats to the Central basketball team. This is a great thing for the people of Bridgeport to be proud of. I’m an alumni and extremely proud. Where are all the others who constantly get on to complain, bitch and moan?
Congratulations to Coach Barry McLeod and his staff, the entire Central High School basketball program and especially the players and their families. You have made us all proud to be from Bridgeport. Use this experience in your life whenever you feel down, remember what it took to overcome and always believe in the word “team.”
AMEN.
There are few, if any, youthful bloggers on OIB it appears. But it is good to reminisce on what a football or basketball championship means to a high school community. Congratulations to the team, the staff and their supporters.
Fifty years ago when we still had New England HS Basketball Tournament in Boston, I can remember Wilbur Cross HS from New Haven beating Notre Dame HS (West Haven) twice during the season, if memory serves me, and a third time in the State finals. Both teams went on to Boston. Student support in school and in the broader community was great to be a part of, just as it is today, with two local schools keeping the spotlight on Bridgeport-Fairfield.
I hope the sports and team abilities of one the Central HS members of class of 2014 and beyond will serve as an incentive to other students to indicate Bridgeport youth have the “right stuff” to make good by showing up, on time, ready to play with assistance from the adults of the community. Time will tell.
*** As a BASSICK-LIONS alumni, I congratulate the Bpt. Central High Hilltoppers on a great win and season! Stay focused and keep up the good work on the court and in the classroom. *** GO HILLTOPPERS! ***
I called it right. The Jesuits would not be able to handle the Central swarm. They are a defense like no other ever, and this was a game for the ages. Central was not supposed to win. They had the big seven-footer but at the end, they ran right at him. Congratulations Barry, Tyler, Betoux, Blackwell and all the rest. Never seen a team like you. You made Bridgeport PROUD!!!
I did not see the game, did not go there and didn’t see it on TV. Anyone know if they are going to play it?
