Ernie Newton formally declared his candidacy for his old State Senate seat Saturday afternoon seeking redemption for past sins and pledging to restore a voice for the jobless, needy and victims of crime.
Newton spoke in front of the site of a former post office on Stratford Avenue in the East End, a symbol of federal budget cuts.
Newton is the first formal challenger against State Senator Ed Gomes who replaced Newton in the State Senate after Newton was forced to resign following corruption charges in 2005. Gomes has not yet announced if he will seek reelection. Newton has been on the comeback trail in recent months taking high profile positions on several issues including organizing a march from the East End to the City Hall Annex following the shooting death of 14-year-old Justin Thompson.
Democratic Party conventions will take place in May, Party primaries in August.
I do not vote in this district, I vote in the 22nd, but I want Gomes to win. Have not been on OIB in a while, how is it going? Having fun watching these crazy candidates in the GOP debates? Gingrich, what a joke!!! Mitt, what a flip flop and Rick Santorum is just a nut case. Ron Paul seems like the most sane in that bunch and has a decent message as well but it looks like he will not win. Obama 2012! Himes 2012! Murphy 2012!
How is it going? We’re still here, donj–holding down the OIB fort. I left you a couple of postings today–look for them! How is college going, donj? How’s that student loan debt coming along? Liking the Obama ‘Change’ so far, I see! After the next presidential election expect to pay more for your books, tuition, fees, and say goodbye to the EIC. I’d admit I’ve been feeling kind of ‘Meek,’ but since 2007 I knew I’d be feeling like that week by week.
Off topic:
I’m with Senator Dodd on this one.

Interesting, Finch is welcoming Ernie back to the fold after his open support of Mary-Jane Foster. I hear Adam Wood has a hit list of employees who he “thinks” supported Foster and he and Nunn are trying to trump up charges to fire them. bpt guy reported this a while back and now I am hearing it too through some good sources.
Happy to read the Post covering that travesty of an MBE office Finch bragged about during the election. Most of the minority businesses interviewed for the story were never helped by Debra Caviness although they made many attempts to get help. Where were these minority business owners during the primary? When is the minority community in this city going to stand up to the white bosses and say enough is enough? bpt guy is right–this is the slave-owner mentality right here in the northeast. Ernie Newton and Ralph Ford are the slave bosses who are happy to get a few crumbs. Pitiful.
Go get ’em, Ernie. You have my vote and those of my dead relatives interred at Mountain Grove Cemetery.
P.T. and Tom Thumb rest in Mountain Grove. Wonder how they’ll vote?
You may want to ask Lydia M.
I think they are in the 22nd now.
And here are prior posts that speak of how Ernie Newton is perceived …

It will be interesting to see who is the endorsed candidate. Since Ed Gomes was endorsed by the DTC to replace Newton and won election challenged by Don Clemons, it is assumed he (Gomes) will be the endorsed candidate.
To the voters in this district,
PLEASE REMEMBER … ERNIE NEWTON VIOLATED THE PUBLIC TRUST AS YOUR ELECTED OFFICIAL.
Yes, he paid for it by going to jail and being fined, but he abrogated his right to be your representative by his illegal actions. A second chance, NOT IN THIS CASE, or any like it. Do community work, get a real job, but not in an elected position.

Let me make it official.
Ernest Newton does not deserve to be re-elected to public office. He forfeited that opportunity when he robbed the very people he swore to serve.
Furthermore even on his best day in office Newton was unqualified, undeserving and completely unsuited to serve.
He is a disgrace to this community and should not be taken seriously.
Yes, Ernest. Sinners do have futures. That future does not include being restored to the office you so shabbily disgraced

Whatever qualifications Ernie Newton might bring to the Senate, the worst thing Bridgeport could do is elect a convicted felon, let alone one convicted of official corruption, to ANY public office. For many that would confirm their image of Bridgeport as a backwater where cash and connections rule.
Why don’t just come out and say it? “A convicted black felon” because in this country Republicans are holding primaries with a candidate that committed crimes in congress that in open court would have been prosecuted. These hearings were held in privacy to protect the status quo. In criminal courts he would have surely gone to jail not just be fined $300,000 dollars. He deceived congress and his fellow Americans yet the conservative Republicans hold him in high esteem, also are willing to forget the “’til death do us part” portion of his marriage vows they hold so high. Three times, last one is in arms now. Correction, latest one because he still has time to find another who can give him head in the front seat of his car but he says she is a nice Catholic girl who helped him find Jesus when his eyes were rolling back in his head the Jesus he found was on the dashboard of his car.
I’m not playing the race card because I am of the caucasian persuasion, so let’s measure everyone evenly because many of you have screwed up just didn’t get caught.
If you didn’t know who I was talking about, Newt could be the Republican choice for President of these United States of America if the religious right conservative right wing has their way. I am one who is praying to my plastic Jesus mounted on the dashboard of my car. I don’t care if it rains or freezes long as I have my plastic Jesus up there with my pair off fuzzy dice.
That’s Boughetto.

Sue, you so crazy! Lol.
No, just off the hook.
Paging Lennie Grimaldi and Joshua Grant:
Lennie, remember the Joshua Grant OIB postings about five months ago? What ever happened to him after I tagged him out in the ballgame we played here about five months ago?
Oh wait, Lennie! I think I had a sighting of Joshua Grant. “… Joshua Grant, the immediate past president of the chamber, acknowledged in an email to the chamber that it did certify Nybor …”
