City Drivers Get Screwed

If you live in Bridgeport you pay higher auto insurance rates than the ‘burbs and rural areas. Same goes for all cities. Insurance companies gouge city residents even if they have excellent driving records. State Representatives Jack Hennessy and Don Clemons are climbing a steep hill trying to legislate uniformity in the rate system. From Hennessy and Clemons:

REP. HENNESSY AND REP. CLEMONS TESTIFY FOR FAIR AUTO INSURANCE RATES

Representative Jack Hennessy and Representative Don Clemons (D-Bridgeport) testified before the Insurance and Real Estate Committee in favor of making auto insurance rates more uniform across the state.

“Every two years we present this bill in the legislature, but it doesn’t progress through the process,” Rep. Hennessy said. “Liability Insurance Rates should reflect the person, not the town. That is why we need to consider Uniform Automobile Liability Insurance Rates for this state.”

“With the current economic condition and the need to find relief, perhaps the time for a measure such as this has come and it will be given serious consideration this session,” Rep. Clemons said.

House Bill 5565, An Act Requiring Uniform Motor Vehicle Insurance Rates among the Towns in Connecticut seeks to even the costs across municipalities to lessen the burden among urban as compared to suburban drivers.

Rep. Hennessy added, “Now is the time to examine a more equitable way for determining insurance rates in this state. It is unfair for people living in urban areas to be charged a huge amount due to the territorial rating of the vicinity in which their vehicle is garaged.”

Jack Hennessy represents the 127th Assembly District in Bridgeport. In addition to serving as Chair of the Veteran’s Affairs Committee, he will serve on the Environment and Finance Revenue and Bonding Committees.

Don Clemons represents the 124th Assembly District in Bridgeport. In addition to serving in the position of Majority Caucus Chair, he serves on the Appropriations, Judiciary and Public Safety and Security committees.

  1. I have an idea for a new auto insurance system. Every Connecticut driver would deposit $100 a month into a special account. At the end of the year if the driver hasn’t had an at-fault accident, he/she gets 65% back.

  2. *** Nationwide Ins. already does something similar for safe drivers. Also too little too late on this old idea that does not have the support of small-town state legislators. Old news is better than no news for our state reps. no? *** HERE WE GO! ***
