It’s been years in the making to name a school leader without “acting” or “interim” as part of a title, but Monday night the Board of Education did something it has rarely done on big issues, unanimously approving Aresta Johnson as superintendent of schools.

Since the summer of 2011 when a majority of school board members threw in the towel and sought a state takeover of schools that was overturned by the Connecticut Supreme Court, the district has been hard-pressed to settle on a long-term leader.

From Linda Conner Lambeck, CT Post:

A board that four months ago was so dysfunctional it wasn’t holding meetings, voted unanimously Monday to name Aresta Johnson its next permanent superintendent.

“We as a board are united behind you,” Board Chairman Joe Larcheveque pledged after the 9-0 vote. “After a prolonged period of interims it is a good feeling to finally get through the process.”

The vote generated cheers from the audience.

  1. Well, change is in the air. There are so many people looking to get elected to the BOE. At three schools I’ve seen petitions and signs. It is good to see that people have had enough.

  2. The BOE appears to be functional again. Aresta Johnson would seem to be just the right person for the Super’s job at just the right time. Great news!
