Commentary from State Senator Herron Gaston:
There’s a quiet but dangerous transformation happening in America — one that threatens the very foundation of our democracy. While headlines cycle through partisan spin and the latest celebrity controversy, a more sinister narrative is playing out in the shadows: the erosion of justice, the silencing of dissent, and the normalization of political retribution.
We are slowly slipping into something we were warned about in history books — something we always thought couldn’t happen here. A two-tiered system of justice is taking hold, and with it, a chilling message: if you disagree with those in power, there will be consequences. If you conform and play along, your sins may be forgiven — not by repentance, but by allegiance.
This is not a left vs. right issue. It’s not about party politics or whether you voted red or blue. It’s about the soul of the American experiment — one that enshrined the right to free speech, the presumption of innocence, equal protection under the law, and checks on executive power. These weren’t just lofty ideals penned on parchment — they were the guardrails designed to prevent tyranny.
Yet today, we see those guardrails being tested — even dismantled.
Public figures who speak out risk being blacklisted or “canceled.” Private citizens who post the “wrong” opinions online may lose their jobs. Whistleblowers and dissenters are painted as threats to the state, while loyalists who toe the party line are elevated, praised, and even pardoned for actions that would ruin the average person’s life. When power is used to protect the powerful and punish the disobedient, we are no longer operating under democracy — we are inching toward authoritarianism.
Yes, the First Amendment protects us from government censorship — but that principle is now being outsourced. If the government can’t silence you directly, a mob will. Or your employer will. Or a powerful platform will quietly erase your voice from the public square.
We must ask ourselves: Is this the America we want to live in?
Because today, it might be a political commentator or comedian under fire. Tomorrow, it could be you. Your beliefs. Your right to speak. Your job. Your livelihood. Your freedom.
We need to remember that patriotism doesn’t mean blind loyalty to any one leader or party. It means loyalty to the principles that make America worth defending in the first place. Principles that demand we protect the rights of those we disagree with, not just those who echo our worldview.
To be clear: accountability matters. No one is above the law — not politicians, celebrities, media personalities, or CEOs. But accountability is not the same as selective prosecution. Free speech is not the same as mob vengeance. And justice is not justice if it is only applied when politically convenient.
Now is the moment for courage — not just performative activism or social media outrage, but real, principled courage. The kind that demands fairness even when it’s uncomfortable. The kind that defends rights even for people you dislike. The kind that stands up to power, no matter who holds it.
So whether you’re a Democrat or Republican, conservative or liberal — ask yourself: Are you okay with where we’re headed? Or will you speak up before it’s too late?
Because silence, in moments like these, is not neutrality. It’s consent.

It sounds like Senator Gaston hasn’t quite payed attention to the last 33 years. When OIB was founded, Lennie had to offer subscribing members an option of using a handle or some fictitious name. Why?
I’m okay with wherever ever we end up. So far, I’ve ended up right where I am now without the need for Republican participation. There hasn’t been a need to leave Bridgeport to experience and see the path we were heading in.
It’s not too late to load-up a rifle or shotgun before “It’s too late.” Me? I’ll die with a ballpoint pen in my hand or while posting on OIB for I have said and written much fearlessly long enough.
I agree with everything that Senator Gaston said — except that we are “creeping” toward authoritarianism (under Donald Trump). We are not creeping towards it; we are galloping towards it!…

It should never be about blind loyalty to one party. That is what freedom is all about. I remember back when the city council actually had a few Republicans , may be over 20 years since that happened.
Deciding who we like or dislike simply on what other people tell you about them? Taking time to learn more about someone and making your own decisions instead of letting someone else or a group tell you who to support or not. Is it the sound bite? Where ‘s the beef? I remember the news was on Local for 30 min and National for 30 Min. you had three stations to choose from You Trusted Cronkite, or whoever. Now cable news is like watching infomercials even late night TV, the slap chop the set it and forget it oven has been replaced by cable news telling us who to like and who to dislike. and there’s more….

I don’t think it’s about blind loyalty to one party. Shit it’s not even about loyalty to one’s nation, for that matter. Perhaps blind obedience if anything. So, of the looney left and right position go unquestioned even if one agrees.
I find it hard to believe any rational adult can’t come to a conclusion transgenders female should not play against natural born females or you have a constitutional right to bear arms and if someone (male) attacks a female she has the right to take that life. But if she misses and the attacker gets the upper hand and rapes her, she has to being his seed/child to full term, based on the concept life is sacred. To name a few extremes position in this game.

Unity by definition: the state of being united or joined as a whole, One
Diversity by definition: Variety, the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc.
Not, sure if there is a coded element to the words. But you have to ask where that “Unity” was speaking English, communication of thy neighbor when a nation is “importing” non-speaking” Black Africans as slave labor.

I do enjoy the irony of what is currently being played out in our political sphere. I mean, now you have the Left going on about free speech over the cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel, with cheers from the Right. But it was not too long ago when it was the Right was being canceled and fired for their political.
Did we forget how Disney canceled/fired Gina Carano for her remarks, or the wave of termination because of remarks demanding racist, or unprofessional comments about the incident. JK Rowling was demonized and canceled for her views on transgenderism. The list goes on, and on, back in front.
Everything that has taken place with Charlie has taken place with George Floyd with one caveat. The point of view has been flipped. What was once condemnation met with cheers is not cheers met with condemnation. I guess that’s the political game, so much for accountability. JS
