Senator Gaston: ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ – “The Ugliest Monstrosity In Modern History” – Threatens Bridgeport’s Most Vulnerable

State Senator Herron Gaston shares his take on the massive spending bill approved by Congress:

As the pastor of Summerfield United Methodist Church and your State Senator representing the 23rd District, I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges facing Bridgeport—Connecticut’s largest and under-resourced city. The federal “Big Beautiful Bill,” despite its appealing name, is anything but beautiful for our community’s most vulnerable residents.

Healthcare — A Looming Crisis

By imposing stricter work requirements and tightening eligibility for Medicaid (HUSKY), this legislation could cause thousands of Bridgeport families to lose coverage. That loss will force more people into emergency rooms, adding strain to health centers already serving as lifelines in economically distressed neighborhoods.

Nutrition — Families at Risk of Going Hungry

SNAP recipients in Connecticut—about 400,000 statewide—could see their benefits trimmed or become subject to more rigorous work mandates. When you live in a community where nearly one in four residents is below the poverty linectmirror.org+14darientimes.com+14senatedems.ct.gov+14, cutting nutritional support is not just shortsighted—it’s dangerous.

Seniors and Home Care — An Unbearable Burden

Our seniors rely on Medicaid-funded caregivers to remain safely in their homes. Should those supports vanish, we risk an uptick in elder homelessness, overlooked medical crises, and an overflow of nursing home and ER placements. These are outcomes our community cannot afford—morally or fiscally.

Bridgeport Feels the Pain of State Underfunding

Connecticut has already stepped in with $74 million for Bridgeport’s special education center and additional funds for schools ctpost.com. But federal cuts in healthcare, SNAP, and infrastructure will overwhelm these efforts. Local nonprofits, food pantries, and shelters will be left scrambling—and our city officials will be forced to choose between raising taxes or further slashing services.

Why It Matters for the 23rd District

In Bridgeport and parts of Stratford, nearly 27% of residents live in poverty; more than half are low-incomeonlyinbridgeport.com. These aren’t just statistics—they’re our neighbors, our families, our seniors, and our children.

As Chair of the Public Safety & Security Committee and Vice Chair of Housing, I’ve fought for policies that protect our residents—from rent stabilization to community policing and gun violence preventiononlyinbridgeport.com+9ctpost.com+9ctpost.com+9ctmirror.org+5onlyinbridgeport.com+5senatedems.ct.gov+5. Now we must extend that fight to the state and federal levels.

A Call to Action

  1. Bridgeport and Stratford voices must be heard. Write, call, or meet with our federal delegation. The consequences of this bill are not abstract; they will be deeply real.
  2. Connecticut must mobilize resources. We need targeted emergency funding for healthcare and nutrition to mitigate federal cuts before they hit.
  3. Community organizations and leaders—let’s unite. Churches, food banks, senior centers, and advocacy groups must coordinate to ensure no one falls through the cracks.

In Closing

The “Big Beautiful Bill” may look appealing in Washington, but its effects reach deep into communities like ours—where food, healthcare, and basic dignity are already stretched thin. Bridgeport is more than a zip code—it’s home, and our people deserve far more than leftovers from an unpopular political compromise.

I’m committed to fighting this fight—for our children, seniors, families, and the essential promise that in Connecticut, no one is left behind.

  1. As it pertains to this “Big Beautiful Bill” Who the F knows what in a 1000 page trillions of dollar spending bill that seems to still require borrowing that increase the national deb until the next spending bill showdown. I say that because you have never heard the word balance budget in this debate. JS

Considering the Feds spend close to a trillion dollars in interest payment on it borrowing. That seems to be more than the total amount spent on the Medicaid for enter country.

(In fiscal year 2023, the federal government spent $619.9 billion on Medicaid. This represents a significant portion of total Medicaid spending, which was $900.3 billion, with the remainder coming from state funding.)

It would seem a question reminds what is the state and it reps going to do to step up for the most vulnerable among in the CT?

The work requirement seems off for a party that seem hell bent on the free market and have employer base healthcare system. That bill should require to employers to provide health care coverage, no? JS

Though I still by the old Trump on America’s health care as universal system. You would think the state and it reps, practically those on the Ds side who champion for a universal system to create a universal heath care state plan for all of its employees who they pay a private companies to cover for a prophet. The Feds as will. JS

On a positive note it seems overtime pay is not going to be taxed. I am sure Port police department, I mean the one’s that privilege list. 🙂

As an OIB regular named John, your frequent use of ‘JOHN’ draws me to read your words this morning. While OIB never intentioned a mission to serve as an ESL class, you have made us aware of your journey. So, in a spirit of informal education, may I suggest that you find a form of “spellcheck” so that words you intend to use may come ‘out of hiding’.
Did you mean ‘enter’ or entire? Did you mean ‘Mayoral’ or Mayor? Did your intend ‘Forth’ or Fourth, perhaps? Enjoy the weather. Time will tell.

  3. John?

I use a form a “spellcheck” perhaps the level of the software is not as advance than others with privileges may be provided, but I don’t thing the coded game/words would be unhidden thought with such software? Do you? 🙂

Do I have to answer these question, John.

Did you mean ‘enter’ or entire? Did you mean ‘Mayoral’ or Mayor? Did your intend ‘Forth’ or Fourth, perhaps?

Is the meaning lost if I don’t. 🙂

Is the mean less or lost when you point my spelling and grammatical errors out. 🤣

John, as you know words sometime have two different meanings. 🙂 Which makes the coded game “disingenuous” to say the least, on many levels over the actual words, but understandable on some levels, perhaps not though. 🙂

Sometime my reference to John in the spirit on my informal Catholic upbringing/education and refers to Saint John. While some call upon/reflect on Saints like Gabriel, Michael, Peter, Anthony, Patrick and such. For me it’s John the Baptist. Right, John? 🙂

I mean Koran Jesus is a busy person, and may not have time for my problems. 🤣

Right John B? for Clarity. 🙂
