Na Na Na Na … Hey Hey … Kiss Him Goodbye–The Story Behind the Song

They didn’t know it at the time, but a couple of Bridgeport kids, Gary DeCarlo and Paul Leka, wrote a classic that’s become a rock anthem. Leka, the great songwriter, passed away last year. Gary DeCarlo will perform the song, among others, September 29 at the Downtown Cabaret Theatre. This Saturday you can meet him at the Bridgeport Public Library. From the library:

Saturday, September 15th, 2:00 – 4:00 PM, Burroughs & Saden – Community Room, please join author Mary Rose Scinto and singer, song writer Gary DeCarlo for a discussion and signing the new book: Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye–The story behind the song and its lead vocalist and co-writer Gary DeCarlo. Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye was originally supposed to be a throw away B-side recording.

However, it became a huge hit and has endured as a part of our popular culture. By the beginning of the 21st century, sales of “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” (a song that had its start in Bridgeport) had exceeded 6.5 million records.

Books will be available for purchase and signing and light refreshments will be served.
