From media partner Chris Powell:
Maybe the most effective slogan for Zohran Mamdani’s campaign for mayor of New York City was “A city we can afford.” Indeed, New York long has been famous for being horribly expensive, part of why people often said, “It’s a nice place to visit but you wouldn’t want to live here.”
Of course the whole country is a lot more expensive lately because of inflation, generated in large part by uncontrolled federal government spending and borrowing that has allowed the country to live far beyond its means. Both major political parties are responsible for that.
But the federal government is no more responsible for New York City’s expensiveness than it is for the expensiveness of the rest of the country. The expensiveness of New York City is mainly the responsibility of city government and New York State government.
Mamdani, a Democrat and a socialist, wants to tax the rich more to create a socialist paradise, but New York City’s income tax is determined by state government, not city government, and the rich already pay a hugely disproportionate share of taxes in the state and are notoriously mobile. That narrows the possibilities for making New York “a city we can afford.”
Housing costs in New York City have been driven up by unchecked illegal immigration, a Democratic policy Mamdami supports.
Mamdani wants more rent control in the city, which will help a few people at the expense of the many by discouraging housing construction and pushing up housing prices even more.
Mamdani wants less enforcement of criminal law in the city and has denounced its police department though crime increases the expense of city living for everyone.
Most city government expense is a matter of the compensation of its employees. New York City’s government workforce is heavily unionized, politically active, generously compensated, and difficult to hold accountable. Making the city more affordable requires making its government more efficient and getting more value from its employees. But the government employee unions are a big component of Mamdani’s party, they embody socialism, and they aren’t likely to cooperate with efficiency.
New York City spends $40,000 per pupil in its school system and yet half the students still fail to meet basic proficiency standards. Graduating so many uneducated young people doesn’t help them earn the income needed to live in an expensive place.

Not understanding this, is it Mamdani, a socialist Democrat who wants to expand on what has been going on under the Democrat governance and will need the state’s help to increase the taxes bases by taxing the rich?
Perhaps taxing the wealthy is a socialist ideal but is there any real difference in any other taxation, like that congestion tax to continue that wasteful fraudulent government?
That being said, I’m sure there is a lot of moving parts in governance, particularly a large cities where the conventional wisdom is a disdain for this country/ Homeland/the residence they live.
Don’t buy that just take a look at their subways system and then take a look at the mantenality of Japan’s subways system. And I’m not just talking about the average person how sue treat it, but the people within the government themselves how managed them. The only priority is how much can I get out of this for myself, f the system, f the people. So of course there’s going to be a lot of mismanagement, malfeasance, and Corruption in any and all apparatuses of governance where there is is no King, owner or proprietor, just an election cycle, wave or not.
Considering democratic by definition is socialism in nature that takes shape, morphs into the form of a business where it’s revenue is based on taxation.
A far cry from capitalism philosophical ways of kinship/ owner/ proprietor, where as innovation , creativity , production , service are the guiding forces I’m generating revenue/ profits, minus cost of an expense/ operation.
Unlike taxation to increase revenue streams for governance, efficiency is their means of increased revenue for that proprietor.
A balance is needs be achieved for any equitable quality standard of life, ,no?
Thinking of Taxation, business and governance of society as a whole. Automation that replaces a human job should be taxed as an individual per se with regards Social Security, Healthcare that attributes to the overall Society human govemental needs.
Just, a thought when I was at the grocery store using the self checkout cashier that replaced a worker, not to long ago. but for for any society to function popular with a standard of a quality of life people have to have means of earning AKA job, No. What was once 10 cashiers, workers, trurned to two cashiers and eight automated ones.
To quote Mitt Romney “corporations are people my friend” with regards to political contributions.
Automation/job replacement are people too and should be taxed accordingly to human governmental societal needs ie, security Medicare/health tax,
That’s a more Equitable tax than taxing criminality with cameras as a means of increased Revenue stream I mean a congestion tax shit I thought the bus cameras are fup Jesus

Based on the traditional Democrat party Machine who did ‘t support him it going to see how this plays out in the news 🙃
So is “democratic socialism” to be Connecticut’s fate as well?
Based on this assessment the “traditional” Democrat is the fundamental problem. So either it going to take Republican from outside or a socialist democrat from with it, no?
OR considering the progress the Port has made G2 perhaps Joe should give Lamont other run. 🤣
