Drink Up! Kool-Aid Politics In The Final Days

Days from Tuesday’s general election to choose a new mayor, the campaign camps are stirring up the final drinks. From CT Post scribe Brian Lockhart:

A few decades ago Alveta Taylor’s mother bought a home on the lower East Side in anticipation of the redevelopment of 50 acres of waterfront property across Interstate 95.

Ex-Mayor Joseph Ganim has been taking credit for that Steel Point project during this year’s comeback attempt, even though his corrupt pay-to-play schemes stalled it for years.

That is not something Ganim talks about. But Taylor said she is not fooled.

“I voted for Ganim three times,” Taylor said Thursday while shopping at the small Pueblo Supermarket on Pembroke Street, a short walk from Steel Point. “This time I’m not drinking the Kool-Aid.”

  1. When the Post stopped publishing arrest reports on page 2, the paper’s readership dropped. Now the bail bondsmen have to solicit business in the BPD’s holding cells.

  2. Somebody mentioned there was a press conference today. When I got home I expected to see something on channel 12. I was told Joe Ganim wanted to send flowers to Foster’s communications team. I didn’t know about the press conference and I couldn’t tell you who does all the communications. It sounded like something that would have been on the news. Maybe at 11? Four days to go. Very exciting. This evening there were many volunteers, many I have not seen in nearly 30 years as they are still Republicans. Foster is building a strong coalition in these final days. From what I’ve read, this CT Post article, I thought Ed Gomes was very effective with Foster. There was so much more that could have been addressed regarding Ganim and Steelpointe. With four days left, Ganim is holding his breath. If he wins, he will have effectively run a campaign for months never addressing his opposition.

  3. Fact is Finch glommed onto a big-box easy-peasy cookie-cutter project at Steelpointe instead of the billion dollar mixed-use project that was sold to the City Council and justified the taking of a neighborhood. Finch had to hock development rights for a Walmart to get it “built by primary day” and the gang that couldn’t shoot straight at Kooris’ helm failed at that. Finch should go to Stealpointe Nov. 5th and have himself a $20 million dollar Starbucks consolation latte because that’s the only thing these dopes could pull off by election day. Don’t put your eggs in one basket, they say. Bass Pro will be open but most of Bridgeport’s neighborhoods are in chaos and no one in their right mind would do business in any of them without a Saturday Night Special and some Kevlar.

    1. Yes, it seems Finch development was to give away the store in 30-40 year tax-free squatting just to look productive. I know you are with Ganim. Torres has put in a resolution in the council to stop these free rides on the Bridgeport voter. As Mayor it won’t happen. No person I have spoken with thinks 30 years is reasonable. Ten maybe. Plus, if the Super Walmart is also a gun and ammo shop, then how could that be development in the best interests of Bridgeport? We don’t need bullets with groceries, bedding or alarm clocks. Hey, at least Bass-Pro will get more Bridgeporters into the great outdoors. Take your fishing lure you could have bought at Jimmies to Seaside Park and look at all the tubes and panels on Mount Trashmore, if that actually gets built. Another sweetheart deal the taxpayers may not see a benefit from and do get to clean up when it rots on the hill. And I think I liked Finch.

  4. Bass Pro is opening in a few weeks. Housing, Hotel and a luxury cineplex to follow. Mayor Finch has lured Bass Pro which will be a major destination for years to come. The Ferry will arrive at Steelpointe and a waterfront boardwalk will open the waterfront for the first time. Congratulations to Mayor Finch. Take a bow and thank you for proving all the naysayers wrong. Mayor Finch has had many successes and I believe he will be able to deliver at least 8000 votes for Foster as a fusion vote. Four days to go, Mayor get busy! I am counting on you.

    1. Steve. Maybe you didn’t get the memo. Your idol lost! You can now stop hanging off his testies. Glad you’re still in the prediction business as you never get one right and it usually ends up diametrically the opposite way.

      1. Phantom and Bridgeport Kid,
First, did you imagine all the people who voted for Finch and all those who just assumed he was going to win will not vote for Foster??? Could you ladies be more naïve? The answer is yes. Here is my final prediction. Rick Torres will be full-time at Harborview. Black Rock will elect Tyisha Toms and John Marshal Lee.

    2. Steve, when I went to the council swearing-in two years ago, it was a moment for the neighborhoods, some smiles etc., then Finch gave his speech and the room went cold. Mind you, I was just watching, fairly neutrally, so I was surprised and definitely noticed the ice in the room. Afterwards I told him he got the cold shoulder, his response, “got to have a thick skin in politics.” I said, “and you do, right?” I told him the people want to see some heart and I knew he had one in there. Of course, to most politicians, that is pure bullshit, what does heart matter? Well, he was regarded as indifferent, antagonistic and arrogant in the neighborhoods. Definitely during the school takeover, whether right or not, I don’t know. My point is this primary vote was not necessarily a vote of confidence or love for Bill Finch, it was a vote of people who don’t want to see Joe Ganim back. He is going to deliver 8000 votes? He couldn’t deliver 6000 in the primary, under the conditions above. I know it was a primary, but Finch does not have a vote to deliver. That vote belongs to many people who will do their picking in the hopeful privacy of the voting booth. All the reps up the state chain who worked against Finch in his Caruso primary were backing him because of Ganim as well. So, in the booth, I hope they make a clean and strong choice to send a message of renewal of this city with Rick Torres as an honest broker. That whole thing of supporting people in the chain just because they are Democrats has left Bridgeport in the dark and at least in the council swearing-in I mention, cold and indifferent. You will feel a burden lifted if you elect Torres and get Bridgeport government out of lockup. No time to make sense of that metaphor, but it makes sense in a city in political jail.

  5. Finch is doing very little for Mary-Jane. He made a deal for a state job so he could continue to build his Merf pension. Now he couldn’t give a shit about anyone but himself, the real Bill Finch. MJ made a deal with the devil that could end up hurting her in the end.

    1. Finch is doing everything for FOSTER. SHE HAS HER OWN AGENDA TO MOVE THE CITY FORWARD. WASN’T THAT MAYOR FINCH AND JOHN FABRIZI WALKING TIRELESSLY IN THE NORTH END? I KNOW THE DAY MAYOR FINCH ENDORSED FOSTER HE WAS COMMITTED.

CITY HALL SMOKER, YOU WOULD KNOW HE MADE A DEAL FOR A STATE JOB BECAUSE THERE WAS A MEMO? YO WERE IN HIS INTERVIEW? YOU HEARD HE WAS REPLACING CHRIS CARUSO? I HEARD HE HAD PURCHASED A RED ROBIN FRANCHISE HE’S GOING TO OPEN IN THE NORTH END. JUST A RUMOR, MAYBE NOT.
